Pipeline 'blow-off' seen from opposite side of KY 551

2017-07-08 - Area of Milepoint 6, near Plum Point Baptist Church - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
When Adair County Emergency Management Director warned that the Columbia Gas Tranmission pipeline blow-off would be LOUD, it was a bit of an understatement. Old time residents have been used to the noise, some say the blow-offs occur about every four years, but in the area with so many newcomers it was bewildering and disconcerting, to say the least, when, with little warning from the company, the blow-off first sounded before being completed in about one hour. Older area residents remember times when agents from Columbia Gas alerted everyone, in person, in earshot of the event. Many say that the sound has changed over the years, from a higher pitched, shrill sound to the equally loud but more bass sound of today. Emergency Manager Mike Keltner is requesting that the company give more advanced notice in the future. - EW

Sights and smells of FM2 may pull you in on a Saturday morning

'Darrell Andrew had the first tomatoes I saw as I walked into the market. They weren't just any tomatoes, they were imperfect in shape and color, warm, fresh from the stalk tomatoes that made me want to bring them to my face, inhale their sweet aroma and then take a bite, like I did as a child following my mom through our gardens in Sulphur Well. I decided not to do that before purchasing. - LW

If you walk by or roll by with the windows down on a Columbia, KY Saturday morning, the signts and smells of the Farmers Market on the Square, FM2, at the corner of Merchant and Campbellsville Streets, will entice you to stop.

The aromas of breakfast warming, coffee making, steaks grilling, lunch preparation starting in the little yellow truck will call to your senses. The earthy smells of garden plants and of vegetables will surround you -- tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, onions, and that doesn't begin to say how happy yours eyes will be at the sights of reds, greens, yellows and purples.

There are acquaintances old and new to wave hello to and enjoy coffee with.

Beshear: Reformulated painkiller still subject to abuse

Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear says opioid painkiller being pulled by pharmaceutical company is just a 'First Step' in fighting epidemic.

By Terry Sebastian, Crystal Staley

Frankfort, KY - In 2015, more than 225 Kentuckians died from a drug overdose with Opana in their blood.

Now that the makers of the opioid painkiller announced July 6 that it will no longer sell the drug, Attorney General Andy Beshear is calling the move a "first step" in fighting against what he believes is the single greatest threat to Kentucky - the state's drug epidemic.

Beshear sent his concerns on the potential for abuse by Kentuckians on a reformulation of the drug, Opana ER (extended release), to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February during an open comment period on the drug.

"The FDA previously determined the reformulated Opana ER can still be readily prepared for injection and can be crushed with common items for snorting," Beshear said in his comments to the agency. "'Snortable' or injectable drugs have crippled Kentucky, ranging from the widespread abuse of Oxycontin to the return of heroin. Where the reformulation has merely been found to impede one of many means of abuse, approving labeling Opana ER as 'abuse deterrent' may mislead patients and providers."
