Carol Perkins: Easter brings memories of Dad & Irvin Berlin

And clothes: Not a whole outfit, she says, but at least a new item or two. 'I'll have on something new!' she writes. 'After all, this marks the day of a new beginning.'
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: On watching the grands' games in person

By Carol Perkins

My dad used to sing Irvin Berlin's "Easter Parade" every Easter morning as we were getting ready for church. As I put on my Easter bonnet and slipped into my new dress bought for the day, I listened to him singing in another part of the house. To me, he sang just like Fred Astaire from the movie "Easter Parade" or Bing Crosby from the movie "Holiday Inn". The lyrics brought the movie right into my home.

Care of the earth and its results is focus of recent meetings

- Did you know that each small thing, even if it looks like a weed or a creepy crawler, lives for a reason to help the earth support her residents?

- Do you think about how happy disease-carrying mosquitoes are to discover garbage on the sides of the road holding pockets of moisture for their breeding pleasure?

- Are you aware that Caterpillars, pound for pound, have more protein than beef?

- Did you know that more shade trees help curb the need to use air conditioning that, when combined with sunlight, damages our breathing?

By Linda Waggener

Things are coming full circle as we think about why Earth Day, April 22, 2017 is meaningful, and how each of us is going to respond to the needs it represents.

Even as our government declares we don't need environmental protections, more and more individual citizens are paying attention to the facts -- our climate is hotter, dryer, more prone to storms, and by degrees less friendly to plants, animals and humans. There may never have been a time when it is more important for each of us to think globally but act locally, with immediacy.

Shepherd Shop hours inquiry -- can anyone help?

A lady from Glasgow just called after she'd googled to find the hours of the Columbia Catholic Church store.

The Columbiamagazine.com church directory popped up in her search so she was able to get the church telephone number, however, when she calls the church it just goes to voice mail.

If any readers know the days and hours the Shepherd Shop is open, we will be happy to add it to the church directory. Just click "comment" below for a reply form where you can add the information. -- Thanks in advance for neighbors helping neighbors. -- LW

Lent: what are you giving up?

Another Angle Article from 10 years ago - so relevant in the interesting times we live in - reprinted for the Easter Season. A life, a centenary, and some real sacrifice to recall for Lent was first published 12 March 2006 in the Hart County News-Herald.
To see other articles by this author, enter "Rev. Joey N. Welsh," or "Another Angle," in the searchbox.

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Throughout more than a millennium of Christian history, the idea of "giving up" something for Lent has been a widespread practice of personal discipline and sacrificial devotion, intended to recall Jesus' 40 day fast in the wilderness, as well has his ultimate act of self-giving on the cross. Centuries ago the system of self-denial for Lent (especially giving up meat) was quite formal and compulsory, strictly regulated by church authorities.

A few hundred years ago in many European communities even the wealthiest carnivore Christians would not have gone near a piece of meat during Lent for fear that the local priest would find out. (The poor, lowly serfs seldom had much meat anyway, so their temptation was less intense.)
