Adair County Fiscal Court Meeting 14 Mar 2017 - Report

At the Tuesday, 14 Mar 2017 regular session of Adair Fiscal Court


  • 10 member Litter Abatement Advisory Committee appointed to help solve roadside litter problem
  • Re-assignments at Adair Recycling/Litter Abatement allows for 5-day a week litterpickup
  • Adair SAR receives $2,500 in funding
  • Regional Jail reports $118,572.40 total February billings
  • Sheriff Moss reports February tax receipts totalling $134,310.45
  • Green River Animal Shelter reports February receipts of $920

The Adair County Fiscal Court showed it's resolve to clear the roadsides and countryside of litter with the establishment of a blue ribbon 10-person committee comprised of a passionate and dedicated environmentally friendly membership. Named to the Litter Abatement Advisory Committee were Magistrates Harold Burton (1) and Terry Hadley (7), and Vicky Pike, Wendy Burt, Doug Keaton, Tony Rose, Kelli Bonifer, CJE Andrea Waggener, David Smith, and Pam Hancock.

The action came in the 35-minute meeting which held with Magistrate Billy Dean Coffey, (District 7) presiding in the absence of CJE Michael Lee Stephens. All magistrates, Harold Burton (1), Daryl Flatt (2), Sammy Baker (3), Perry Reeder (4), (Coffey), Greg Caldwell (6), and Terry Hadley (7), present. Magistrate Coffey said that the committee will have the counsel of Lisa Greer, now County Court Clerk, who was deeply involved in the highly successful Litter Abatement program headed by Solid Waste Coordinator A.L. Sinclair in the administration of CJE Ann Melton.

Magistrate Coffey reported that Judge Stephens is now in his office about two hours a day, and that his recovery is going well. He said that Judge Stephens plans to conduct the April 2017 Fiscal Court meeting. He conveyed Judge Stephens thanks for prayers, cards and encouragement following his surgery.

He was a retired employee of General Electric in Louisville, KY. and a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He was a native of Pickett County, TN, and a resident of Cumberland County, KY, a the time of his death. He was the son of the late Dewey Estes Taylor & Edith Lee Cope Taylor, and the widower of Nancy Guinn Taylor. He leaves three direct living descendants.

Brent L. Goodin, 50, Bowling Green, KY (1966-2017)

was a devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. He was a self-employed contractor and attended Crossland Community Church. Brent loved fishing, outdoor activities, making people laugh, and spending time with his family. Brent graduated from Western Kentucky University and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Brent L. Goodin, 50, of Bowling Green entered into rest Sunday, March 12, 2017 in Bowling Green, KY. Brent was born October 18, 1966 in Danville, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents Leemon and Mildred Scott Goodin.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 11amCT at J. C. Kirby and Son Lovers Lane Chapel, 820 Lovers Lane, Bowling Green, KY. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 15, 2017, 3pmCT until 8pmCT and Thursday 9amCT until time of services all at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bowling Green Gardens.

Mrs. Norma Faye Newton, 66, Taylor Co., KY (1950-2017)

Mrs. Newton professed faith in Christ and was a member of Pitman Valley Baptist Church. She was a former dental assistant and wife of Tommy Jack Newton, who preceded her in death. She leaves three direct living descendants.

There will be a memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Newton on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 12pmNoonCT/1pmET in the chapel of the L.R. Petty Funeral Home, 1765 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY. Bro. Ray Roberts will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, March 18, 2017 after 9:30amCT/10:30amET until time for the service.

Hardin Co. KY, teen driver, 16, dies in traffic accident

Driver, 16, pronounced deceased at the scene of two vehicle collison, by the Hardin County Coroner's Office. Occupants of other vehicle treat and released at the scene. The accident is still under investigation by KSP Trooper/Reconstructionist Scott Rafferty. KSP was assisted at the scene by the Hardin Co. Sheriff's Office, Hardin Co. EMS, Glendale Fire Dept, and the Central Hardin Fire Dept.

John R. Pendleton: Watched Union College win National Title

With a shout-out to Phyllis Curry, who reminded him of the game, writer watched Union College defeat Cornerstone University 72-69, last night, Tue 14 Mar 2017, in the finals of the NAIA Div II Men's Basketball Championship in Grand Rapids, MI. Union College graduate John R. Pendleton recalls Adair County ties to the program when he was a waterboy for the team, Harry T. Loy was a star on the team, and the influence of legenday high school John Burr could be felt - as it can today, with another Columbian, Tim Curry, who is Athletic Director, currently, at the Barbourville school.

CofC Speaker's subject is one nobody wants to hear about

The guest speaker at the March 14, 2017 Chamber of Commerce Meeting in Cranmer Dining Center at Lindsey Wilson College said, "the crowd may be lighter today because it's hard to listen to details about the painful subject of child sexual abuse."

Chamber of Commerce President Ellen Zornes introduced the speaker as Loretta Burton Coppage, one of her own former Adair County Public School students and someone she knew would be great in this work. The speaker is now the Executive Director and Forensic Interviewer at the Lake Cumberland Children’s Advocacy Center, a non-profit agency dedicated to the mission to prevent further victimization of sexually abused children and minimize the emotional trauma.

FRANKFORT, KY (14 Mar 2017) - National Ag Day is Tuesday, March 21, and it is a good time to reflect on some of the many ways agriculture affects us every day.

Agriculture is a major economic driver in Kentucky and the United States. Nationally, it is one of few sectors that can boast a trade surplus. In Kentucky, agricultural exports totaled an estimated $1.46 billion in 2015. A University of Kentucky report found that agriculture and related industries in Kentucky had an estimated economic impact of $45.6 billion and accounted for more than 258,000 jobs in 2013.

Campbellsville Middle School custodian Daryl Ford has received this month's Dare to Soar award.

Campbellsville Independent Schools Superintendent Mike Deaton made the presentation at the Campbellsville Board of Education's regular meeting on Monday, March 13.

In reading a letter nominating Ford for the award, Deaton said Ford goes above and beyond each and every day he is working at CMS.
