Frankfort, KY - It's often said these are the good old days for deer hunting in Kentucky, but for those of a certain age, or new to hunting, it's all they have ever known.

The world was tip-toeing into a new millennium the last time Kentucky's deer harvest did not break 100,000 for a season. The 2016-17 season cleared that mark and surpassed 130,000 for the fifth consecutive season.

Carol Perkins: Planning a funeral - tiny detail, big difference

The granddaughter wanted no part of helping her grandmother carry out her funeral wishes, until, a vital detail is revealed . . . - CAROL PERKINS
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: How about a cooking show with real food?

By Carol Perkins

A grandmother in her eighties decided it was time to tell the granddaughter she had raised what to do in case of her death. The granddaughter, in her early twenties, did not want to talk about her grandmother going anywhere.

"Not listen to me, I'm not dying yet, but I need you to know what to do in case I pass away."

The granddaughter did not want to listen. "I don't want to hear about this."

Unemployment rate remains at 4.8 percent in December 2016

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's seasonally adjusted preliminary unemployment rate was unchanged from November 2016 to December 2016 at 4.8 percent, according to the Office of Employment and Training (OET), an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

The preliminary December 2016 jobless rate was 0.9 percentage points lower than the 5.7 percent rate recorded for the state in December 2015.

The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for December 2016 was 4.7 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Labor force statistics, including the unemployment rate, are based on estimates from the Current Population Survey of households. It is designed to measure trends rather than to count the actual number of people working. It includes jobs in agriculture and those classified as self-employed.

Denise Martin remembers Grant's Shoe Store in Liberty, KY

Comments re photo 70632 Liberty KY still has downtown shoe sales about Boot & Shoe Station, Western Apparel Store, 646 Campbellsville St, Liberty, KY owned by Greg & Denise Martin.

Greg and Denise Martin writes:
We had a visitor in our store today by the name of Billy Grant, who used to own Grant's Shoe Store many years ago here in Liberty, KY. He lives in Columbia now and informed my wife that he had read an article about our store in your magazine; we would like to say many thanks for your story and the picture. As a child I grew up in Lexington, but my parents were from Casey Co, and many times we were at Grant's to do our shoe buying there in downtown Liberty. I agree, you do not see the small businesses in rural towns like you did 35 yrs or more ago but some of us are still around trying to make a go at it. All smalltown business owners appreciate support from local shoppers. I know we sure do.

Thanks again, - Denise Martin
Thanks. - It was great to see your (apparently) thriving store, which, though modern, called back yesterday. We were wondering if Liberty has special tax incentives to help businesses on and near the Square. Maybe a reverse property tax to actually offer a stipend to those who occupy buildings and keep the downtown alive, and a markedly higher property tax on any unoccupied property? If you know, let us know. And best wishes bringing back a tradition. - Ed Waggener By the way: Love the street signs in Liberty.
