How prophetic the words of Rev. A.R. Kasey 110 years ago

Robert Cumming writes:
How prophetic and ironic the words of Columbia Methodist Church's Rev. A.R. Kasey were a hundred years ago as they come full circle. Now internet online shopping sales are eclipsing former mail order icon Sears Roebuck Company resulting in the closing of hundreds of stores and the business seeking a $200 million dollar line of credit and putting it's Craftsman Tool line up for sale . - Robert Cumming

Anyone around the region applying for this trash grant?

By Linda Waggener

When winter sets in, our roadside trash becomes vividly evident and I always wish for a solution. I wonder if anyone in the region is applying for this grant or perhaps others?

Mr. McLean & Rev. Kasey ring in 1907 with sunshine & shadows

110 years ago, Columbia was growing and prospering. The tax base was rising. Business was booming owning in large part to the excellent schools here - Columbia M & F and the Lindsey Wilson as well as, the fact, Mr. McLean wrote in a piece for a Louisville newspaper: " . . . there are no saloons or places of vice...and the watchword is morality." But Rev. Kasey cast a shadow on the economic outlook, that can be read by clicking on the headline for this complete, fascinating story from the past . . .

By JIM

In 1906, amid national economic uncertainties that began in September, Columbia prospered.

At year's end, Fred McLean, man-about-town and astute observer of the human condition, wrote a piece for the (Louisville) Evening Post; the Adair County News republished it in the January 9, 1907 edition. He wrote glowingly of Columbia's burgeoning population (an increase of several hundred since 1900) and the resulting increase in the tax base, which stood at nearly half-million dollars as 1906 drew to a close. And too, noted the author, "there are no saloons or places of vice...and the watchword is morality."

History, the movies & genealogy: Pierre & Bobby Jr kin?

About: - Kentucky Color - Lucy Clark Demumbrunn Chapter V

Charles Marshburn poses puzzler:
The Water Boy: - Do you think the Boucher Billy Joe mentions is any kin to Bobby, Jr? - Charles Marshburn
Interesting question best left up to genealogists, Mike Watson, JIM & the Adair County Public Library. But without paying a high dollar figure to Henry Louis Gates, it's good enough for me that Billy Joe Fudge is a dead ringer for Adam Sandler. - EW

Kentucky Color - Lucy Clark Demumbrunn Chapter V

Whether Lucy Clark Demumbrunn knew much of her illustrious 4th great grandfather, Pierre Boucher, or not is conjecture. Boucher's role in settling New France and dealing with the native Indians has a lasting place in history - of Metcalfe County, of Canada, of the United States, and of Toria, Adair County, KY.

NEXT EARLIER CHAPTER: Kentucky Color - Lucy Clark Demumbrunn Chapter IV
