President Obama Signs Kentucky Disaster Declaration

Adair and Metcalfe Counties in the local area included

The President today declared a major disaster exists in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and ordered federal aid to supplement commonwealth and local recovery efforts in the area affected by severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, landslides, and mudslides during the period of July 2-9, 2016.

Federal funding is available to commonwealth and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, landslides, and mudslides in the counties of Adair, Butler, Caldwell, Calloway, Christian, Clay, Crittenden, Daviess, Edmonson, Hart, Hopkins, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, Metcalfe, Ohio, Todd, Trigg, Union, and Webster.

Robert H. (Bob) Wheeler, Taylor Co./Estill native (1948-2016)

Mr. Wheeler spent the majority of his life in the construction industry. As a young child, his mother had instilled in him a faith in Christ, and earlier this year, he was saved and baptized in the Baptist faith.

Mr. Robert Henry "Bob" Wheeler of Campbellsville passed from this life on Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Campbellsville Nursing and Rehab Center after a battle with cancer.

There will be a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Wheeler on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 5pmCT/6pmET at the Meadowview Baptist Church, 1211 Elkhorn Road, Campbellsville, KY 42718 with Bro. Clay Wheeler officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church after 4:00 PM until time for the service at 5pmCT/6pmET, and after the service until 7pmCT/8pmET. His ashes will be returned to Estill County for burial in the Lunsford Family Cemetery.

Household shower 27 Aug 2016. Family lost everything in fire

A household shower for Phillip and Talitha Cravens is being held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 2pmCT, at Charity Baptist Church, 4072 Holmes Bend Road, Columbia, KY 42728. They lost everything in their house due to a fire in April of this year. They have rebuilt and are finally close to moving back into their home. They can pretty much use any house hold item. Lindsey Wilson Volleyball Invitational now underway

Seven collegiate volleyball teams in Columbia on Friday and Saturday, August 26-27.

COLUMBIA, KY - The third-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team welcomes seven teams for the LWC Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The two-day event will be held at Biggers Sports Center (Court 1), 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY and the Holloway Health and Wellness Center (Court 2), 299 Williams Street, Columbia, KY. All of Lindsey Wilson's contests are in Biggers Sports Center. Other institutions attending the LWC Invitational include Mid-South Conference member Campbellsville (KY), as well as Taylor (IN), Point Park (PA), Brescia (KY), Union (KY), Asbury (KY) and No. 23-ranked Indiana Wesleyan.

Lindsey Wilson plays Taylor and Point Park on Friday at 2pm and 6pmCT, respectively. On Saturday, the Blue Raiders face Indiana Wesleyan and Asbury at 12pmCT and 4pmCT, respectively. All Lindsey Wilson matches are scheduled to take place at Biggers Sports Center.

Columbia Masonic Lodge donates bikes to promote attendance

Adair County Primary Center students gained an extra incentive to not miss school today with the delivery of six bicycles on behalf Columbia Masonic Lodge No. 96. The bikes will be given to three boys and three girls at the school who finish the year with perfect attendance.

LOUISVILLE, KY (24 Aug 2016) - Today during the annual Kentucky Prosecutors Conference, Attorney General Andy Beshear presented $2 million to the Prosecutors Advisory Council to implement, expand and enhance Rocket Docket programs in Kentucky.

Rocket Docket is a program that permits a local commonwealth's attorney or county attorney to expedite cases through the judicial system. It also allows select defendants rapid access to substance abuse treatment, generating significant cost savings to local county jails.

Carey Cockerell named head of KY Dept. of Juvenile Justice

New Commissioner Carey Cockerell brings 40 years of experience to task, is graduate of Kent School of Social work. The Adair County Youth Development Center is operated by the Department of Juvenile Justice

FRANKFORT, KY (26 Aug 2016) - Kentucky Justice Secretary John Tilley announced today that Carey D. Cockerell, the former head of family and child protection in Texas, has been named as the new commissioner for the state Department of Juvenile Justice.

Cockerell is taking the department's helm after more than 40 years of experience in youth programs. As commissioner for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, he implemented one of the largest reforms in Texas history, overhauling practices in child and adult services, expanding staff and establishing a first-ever health care project in child protection.

LEBANON, TN. - The 12th-ranked Lindsey Wilson Football team overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Cumberland (TN) 33-29 in their season opening game on Thursday night, August 25, 2016.

The Blue Raiders (1-0) outscored the Phoenix (0-1) 14-8 in the final 15 minutes to secure the team's ninth-ever fourth-quarter comeback.

Adair County Elementary School students were presented with a unique opportunity to earn prizes and - even more importantly - financial aid for college this week with the kickoff of the school's annual fundraiser.

"This is the only thing we do to raise money all year long," Principal Steve Burton says. "It'll go to buy things we need throughout the year--it all goes directly back to our students and our future students."

Over 60,000 homes have been flooded and they along with volunteers from 8 Days of Hope are trying to help those that were devastated.

James Randall McCullough, Green Co., KY (d. 24 Aug 2016)

He was a United States Air Force Veteran. He worked for the Forestry Service and he was a farmer.

James Randall McCullough, 79, departed this life Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at his home in the Pierce Community of Green County, KY.

According to the wishes of Mr. McCullough the family chose cremation. There will be a private service at a later date. There will be no public visitation or service. Foster-Toler-Curry Funeral Home, 209 W Court Street, Greensburg, KY, is in charge of the arrangements.
