Traffic Alert: WK Pkwy/Lincoln Pkwy/US 31W at I65 Exit 91

On Tuesday, June 14, 2016), bridge work for the Exit 91 Bridge over I65 will result in several impacts to traffic. Barrier wall will be set across eastbound and westbound Western Kentucky Parkway bridges and traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions.

Westbound traffic on the Lincoln Parkway to the Western Kentucky Parkway will be reduced to one lane between Sportsman's Lake Road and US 31W so traffic will be in a one lane pattern ahead of the US 31W intersection.

James E. (Jim) Roark, Russell Springs, KY (1936-2016)

He was a United States Marine Corp veteran and will be accorded full military honors by the Russell County Honor Guard at committal rites. He was a member of the Mt. Calvary Church in Dunnville, KY and had been a farmer. He was a native of Elkhorn, WV and was a resident of Russell Springs, KY, at the time of his death. He leaves three direct living descendants. His wife, Shirley Asberry Roark, survives.

KY Treasurer initiates alert on check fraud scam

Communications Director, Office of State Treasurer Allison Ball

Frankfort, KY - Treasurer Allison Ball initiated an alert on a check fraud scam that seeks to steal the identity of Kentuckians, her office announced on Monday afternoon.

"When we saw the first check come in late Thursday, my office remained vigilant, watching for fraudulent activity," Treasurer Ball said in a statement. "When we knew that we had identified a potential scam, we conducted an internal review. Once confirmed, we took steps to immediately contact the Attorney General's and Secretary of State's Office."

The scam is designed to get the check recipient to give away their personal information. The scam goes as follows:

David Bell, 72, Taylor Co., KY (1943-2016)

He was a barber for over fifty-plus years and a retired farmer. He was a member of Mt. Roberts Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years. He was a native of Taylor County, KY and a resident of the county at the time of his death. He was the son of thelate Virgil Lawrence Bell & Stella Louise Killen Bell. He is survived by his wife, Pat Bell. He leaves 12 direct and one step living descendants.

This time, they weren't drug eradication choppers; helicopters were part of a KY National Guard training exercise.

A number of people were concerned last week when a large number of helicopters were heard over Columbia, wondering if there might have been a major disaster in the area or if it might be surveillance helicopters searching for some of our county's more lucrative cash crops. County Judge Mike Stephens and Senator Max Wise checked into the situation and learned it was a much more benign situation for now. It was merely a training operation.

Leaders of The United Methodist Church attend weeklong school

COLUMBIA, KY - After spending a week at Lindsey Wilson College, Denise Wallace is excited to take the lessons she has learned while attending The United Methodist License to Pastoral Ministry School back to her home church.

The weeklong school - sponsored by the KentucKY Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church - was held June 5-11 at Lindsey Wilson College. It certifies laypersons to present sacraments in their assigned United Methodist churches. For some of the students, the school will enable them to have expanded responsibilities in their home church; for other students, the school is a step on eventually becoming pastor of a church.

55 workers pack 1,580 meals in 1.5 hours at Columbia Christian

It was an amazing show of Christian love at work. Complete meals at a cost of just 25c per meal, were portioned and packed as individual meals, placed in shipping boxes, in just over one and one-half hours, under the directions of Chase Cotten with the I.D.E.S. group of Noblesville, IN. Complete meals will be shipped to Haiti and Afghanistan. Even the littlest workers got involved by making food boxes for families in the Columbia area who might need food at times the local food panty is closed. Want to help in efforts like these?
