Letter: Make it a safe and welcoming year

Mitzi Bault writes:
I've been seeing all the Lindsey Wilson College students moving in to start or finish a chapter of their lives, and thinking about how the college has grown in the last 15 years or so. The college is probably the best thing going for Adair County, but with this new college year, we must remember there will be students crossing on Fairground Street, Young Street, Lindsey Hill; and runners and bikers all over the county. Please slow down and be on the lookout for these students. We are a college town, let's all take part in making it a safe and welcoming year. --Mitzi

Jim Barbee: Sees Craft Brewing Industry in Adair Co. future

By Jim Barbee, native son of Adair County, KY
Currently of Buffalo, NY

Good Afternoon Ed,

Just to let you know how important your CM is to me while living in beautiful Buffalo, NY! You keep me grounded with my roots and appreciation for greater Columbia & Adair County.

Ed, I remain convinced in the possibilities and potential for a "craft brewing industry", as a positive step for Columbia's citizens/farm families and economy. Such an option will not likely work for the county, in the beginning.

Remembering Alta Carroll Lavigne (1920-2015

With her passing, only four of the Russell Springs High School Class of 1941 survive.

Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com

Alta and her twin brother Alva (d. 2008) both were members of the Russell Springs High School class of 1941. The following comments about her appeared in a class review published in the Times Journal in the spring of 1950:
"Of course, no one could ever forget how well represented our class was with twins, so we find Alta Chrisman heading this list. Alta received many honors in school for her cooperation and loyalty so it's not surprising to know she still carries these traits in guiding the futures in the City Graded School of Campbellsville, Ky. She attended college right after graduation and entered the teaching profession, where she has remained despite the fact that she is married and has a home to care for. She is married to Gordon Carroll and lives in Elkhorn, Ky."
Thirty-three young women and men comprised the Russell Springs High graduating class of 1941. With Alta's passing, only four members survive. See Also: Alta Carroll Lavigne, Taylor County, KY (1920-2015)

Tom Chaney: Galilean Twins

Of Writers and Their Books No. 267, First published on 29 August 2010. Galilean Twins, a review on the book by Phillip Pullman, which Tom says essentially retells the four gospels in a way both refreshing and startling.

A week or so ago I stumbled upon an interesting sounding book which turns out to be a part of a British series which bears further reading. The publisher is Canongate and each of its myth series presents a reimagining of a classic story by a popular author.

Margaret Atwood retells the tale of Penelope and Michael Faber does the same for Prometheus. With those stories readers may be sort of amused, but when Philip Pullman fiddles with Jesus folks start gathering dry sticks.

KY-FI: Using Project Fi in the Bluegrass

This is the first of a multipart series about the use of Google's new Network of Networks in the wilds of Kentucky. Project Fi looks to be a homerun in big cities, where Sprint and TMobile have solid coverage. Tom will find out how well it works in a more rural setting, and whether carting around the massive Nexus 6 is a reasonable compromise for $20/month unlimited talk and text.

By Tom Waggener

I come from a long line of men who hate the phone company and suspect that any and all charges incurred by phone usage are some manner of theft. The cellular age has been no different, and I have continally searched for the least offensive phone company available. Least offensive being cheapest, while allowing the most freedom, and occasionally listening as I get irate with customer service about a problem I clearly created.
