Remembering an Adair teacher who never forgot her students

Twenty years after a little first grader gave Pam Geisselhardt a resin Christmas Bear, she'd wear on Christmas Day, and always asked about him through the years.

Joyce Loy writes
I, too, will miss Pam greatly. She was more than a co-worker. She was a friend.

I met her when my son started Kindergarten and she became his first grade teacher back when they had multi-age class rooms, so he was with her through third grade. That was the greatest blessing. She had a great gift and love for teaching; she made learning a challenge and fun.

She never forgot her students. She kept up with them. She was always there in Patrick's life, interested in what he and how he was doing, always saying, "Tell Patrick, I asked about him." Then at Christmas season she'd always (20 years later) still wear the little resin Christmas Bear he'd made her in first grade. Her passion and love for children will never be forgotten. - Joyce Loy

BJF: Urges all our citizens to watch video w/Strong Towns article

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I know all our citizens love our community. I love our community, as you do. If you will watch this video and listen to the message with an open mind, hopefully you will begin to see why Ed, I and others continually and purposely speak about changing how we do things in our community. We do not have a grand scheme to impose our values or our concept for community development upon you, our fellow citizens in order to establish a name for ourselves. We do realize, however, that the way we are currently doing things is not improving our community but is actually contributing to its deterioration. This is not because our leaders who support the status quo are bad people but because they like all the rest of us have fallen into this transportation trap. All our community leaders and all of us should be able to see "the handwriting on the wall" after watching and thinking about the way things are, how they got that way and how we can very simply and over time change the way we do things. - Billy Joe Fudge

RRW: Confessions of a traveler in the fast lane

'Patience I just don't have' - he writes

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Commentary from editor & publisher of Just for a Smile News

On the traffic problems in Columbia: I'm one of the problems because "I'm in a hurry and don't know why" - always have been and most likely always will be.

People driving slow bother me; I know I should be laid back, but I'm not wired that way.

I constantly look for ways to do a job easier or faster; don't know why. but I do. Slow just bothered me and I know slow people have as much right as I have to be in a rush.

Mike Keltner ID's Where in the World is it? Peaceful little Branch

Answer: Skinhouse Branch at Camp Knox, which flows behind Mt. Gilead Christian Church in Southern Green County, KY
Next previous:Where in the world it?, not answered yet, by the way.

By Mike Keltner

If I am correct (he is, it's Skinhouse Branch) with the mystery picture here is some more on Camp Knox I pulled from greencounty.ky.gov:.

"About 1770, a group of some 22 hunters from Virginia united for a hunting expedition west of the Cumberland Mountains into what is now south central Kentucky. The Expedition was led by Colonel James Knox. Because they were away from their homes for up to three years at a time, they became known as the "Long Hunters."

COF: Conundrums, from Knifley thinker

This is the first item from a Great Thinker in this morning's CM mail. It came, as an astute observer would know it must have, from the Epicenter of Great Thought, Knifley, KY, where the Second Annual Revisit Knifley, Saturday, September 12, 2015, is just about upon on us. (More on that, directly). Now ponder what follows, aforewarned that the questions can split the head of an ordinary thinker like a ripe watermelon:

COF writes:

Most of my kith and kin are aware of my predilection for the offbeat and quirky, such as inverse morphisms and the inanity of my favorite philosopher - Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra.

To that end, I thought maybe the CM congregation could answer some of the puzzlements posed by someone way more offbeat and quirky than I could ever rise to.

Here are some classic musings by George Carlin that have caused much cogitation across the KU Round Table:
  1. Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?
  2. Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank machines?
  3. What was the best thing before sliced bread?
  4. Before they invented drawing boards, what did they go back to?
  5. If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?
And to close, here's one for BJF: Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all?"

News from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture

FRANKFORT, KY - Kentucky's farmers' markets always show their appreciation to their customers, but this week they'll kick it up a notch. Agriculture Commissioner James Comer has proclaimed August 2-8, 2014 Farmers' Market Week in Kentucky.

"Farmers' markets offer farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, unique products made from old family recipes, meats from livestock raised on a family farm, and many other great farm products," Commissioner Comer said. "Farmers' markets also enable consumers to meet the farmers, get to know them, and learn more about how the food was produced. And they provide consumers an opportunity to help farmers earn a living."

The Road to Savoyard

A fella asked me the other day how to get to Savoyard.

The answer was a bit complicated.

I allowed as how if he were in Center, once called Lafayette (pronounced 'Lay-fat'), he could just go down to the south end of town, turn left, then jog a quick right on a nice black top and he'd be there.
