KY Afield Outdoors: Fall fishing carries new meaning this year By Kevin Kelly Frankfort, KY -- Anglers become conditioned to expect high water on lakes in spring and stable conditions in summer before the fall drawdowns to winter pool. After an unusually wet spring, this summer has been anything but predictable in Kentucky. High and falling water have added a degree of difficulty at a time when fishing can be challenging under normal conditions. Lake levels have fluctuated wildly as parts of the state picked up 6, 8, and even 10 or more inches of rain over the past month. A change from widespread heavy rains to a more typical pattern of scattered afternoon showers has allowed many lakes to inch back closer to their prescribed summer elevations. Ralph Roy Waggener: More who helped with 206/55 junction If more people would just speak up and let our government know what they think is the right way to do things, we could have more done the right way. . . Remember, he says, your voice counts if you will just use it By Ralph Roy Waggener Personal Commentary I forgot the most important part of the 206/55 junction and that's the part Columbia Magazine played in the changes made. After several people posted the need for a turn lane off of 206 and made the suggestions early enough that the plans could be changed to add the turn lane. The generous offer from Mr. Wilkerson of right of way property at no cost, sat the stage for a turn lane on to 206 as well. The people who wrote on CM were a big part of making these changes. If more people would just speak up and let our government know what they think is the right way to do things, we could have more done the right way. Thanks to CM and it contributors who made this happen, Ralph Roy Waggener, remember your voice counts, if you will just use it! Thanks so much - And maybe CM did play a role - especially contributors to the news and commentary columns. Still, the role KY Transportation Cabinet, Somerset, KY played was magnificent. They've hit homes many times lately. They untangled the traffic trap at Jamestown Road and Russell Road, and did an even more impressive job on this corner. Gratitude is the shortest lived commodity in politics, but I don't think we should ever forget that Gov. Beshear listened to when he learned the economics of a relative small expenditure doing so much good. I'm grateful for that. Thanks for the kind words for CM. - EW 2015-07-30 14:11:52 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary

Ex-denizen of 'Land from Off' takes turn on: A turn Jon Halsey writes: Way back when I was a young denizen in the land of "Off," we understood that a "turn" of corn or any other meal referred to the product "turning" around on the mill stones. This often gave rise to the response when asked: "How ya doing?" as "Jest waitin' my turn." --Jon Halsey, Knifley, KYComments re article 76739 Roger D Smith DMD with more on A Turn 2015-07-30 04:31:20 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
