Joyce Coomer: The morning glories

2015-07-09 - Adams Alley, Columbia, KY - Photo by Joyce Coomer.
Joyce Coomer writes: "Here are photos of the morning glories the one time I managed to get them left alone long enough to bloom. Sadly, they were cut down a few days later, even though they were still blooming. Thankfully, some blooms had matured and seeded so there was a start for the next year. The blooms are no more than an inch wide, if that large. There used to be a crop of white ones further down the sidewalk from the red ones but constant mowing has obliterated them."

A weed is anything growing out of place

Gary Lane writes:
Just a clarification of the definition of "weed." A weed is any plant that is growing "out of place." A corn plant is a weed in a soybean field but a productive, desirable plant in a corn field. We have commonly referred to weeds as anything we don't like growing in our yards, flowers, fields etc. but a weed is merely a plant growing in a place where it should not be growing. Enjoying the chatter about the morning glory plants. - Gary Lane

KY Afield Outdoors: Find the thermocline for better fishing

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - Fishing instruction for decades preached anglers should fish deep, cool water during the hottest days of the summer.

This makes sense as fish are cold-blooded animals and their bodies are the same temperature of the water that surrounds them.

However, fishing deep water in summer on a lake such as Taylorsville Lake may mean your offerings are in a dead zone. Warming air temperatures change the nature of the water in a lake. Anglers need to consider these changes while summer fishing.

Gov. Beshear statement on today's meeting with Casey Co. Clerk

FRANKFORT, KY - (July 9, 2015) - "This morning, I advised Mr. Davis that I respect his right to his own personal beliefs regarding same-sex marriages. However, when he was elected, he took a constitutional oath to uphold the United States Constitution. According to the United States Supreme Court, the Constitution now requires that governmental officials in Kentucky and elsewhere must recognize same-sex marriages as valid and allow them to take place. One of Mr. Davis' duties as county court clerk is to issue marriage licenses, and the Supreme Court now says that the United States Constitution requires those marriage licenses to be issued regardless of gender. Mr. Davis' own county attorney has advised him that his oath requires him to do so.

"While there are two or three county court clerks still refusing to perform their duties, the rest of the county court clerks are complying with the law regardless of their personal beliefs. The courts and the voters will deal appropriately with the rest.

"I will not be calling any special session on this topic and costing the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars doing so. Any proposal about the process of issuing marriage licenses that meets the standards of the Supreme Court ruling should be carefully thought out and could be considered in the regular session in 2016." - Gov. Steve Beshear.

Guy Babin: If wildflowers would be like civilized flora

'Now consider the weed. . . Perhaps the blooms of weeds should be renamed something other than flower as they serve only to entrance and dupe the unsuspecting lover of nature. - GUY BABIN

By Guy Babin

If only wildflowers would behave like civilized flora.

Wildflowers have a distinct identity problem that's "rooted"; most often deeply and intrusively in the origins of their taxonomy. "Weed" is most likely on a list of politically incorrect monikers these days, but dangit, that's what they are!

There are lots of things people profess to find charming and cute that are really a nuisance and visually downright homely and common. Take the duckling syndrome for one example.

Queen Anne's Lace is a wonderful wildflower

Writer has never gotten chiggers from it; blackberries are another matter.

Joyce Coomer writes:

Is a wonderful flower. I have several around the forsythia that I haven't mown. Most of them are six feet tall or taller . . . and these are "wild" Queen Anne's lace, not the ones hawked in a seed catalog a few years ago that would get taller than the "wild" Queen Anne's lace . . . hmmm . . . has no one observed that the reason "wild" Queen Anne's lace is seldom above waist high is because it gets mown and regrows and mown and regrows . . .

Oh, and I have never gotten chiggers from Queen Anne's lace . . . but after an afternoon of picking blackberries is a whole 'nuther story!
