Jon Halsey comments on effort to move Davis statue

by Jon Halsey
Personal commentary

By all means let's rewrite our history.

But be forewarned: 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.' - Geo. Santayana

The Emanuel AME Church tragedy was an insane act committed by what I believe will be found to be an insane person. However, let's rush to judgment and get rid of everything someone doesn't like.

Better signage needed to keep large trucks off Greensburg ST

By Maury Lewis
Personal commentary

There are a lot of 18 wheelers that come down Greensburg Street that must be lost, because they turn around in our church parking lot.

This is not about the parking lot turn around.

It is about not having signs on Greensburg Street to point them in the direction of of the bypass.

Old Coddger: Still no sign from Square to East 80

Old Coddger writes:
New signage looks good, but there is still no sign to show "out of towners" that Hwy 80 East goes up Jamestown Hill. The only sign shows that Jamestown Street is Hwy 55 South. I guess the same feller, who ever that is, that designed the Greensburg Street X Veterans Bypass intersection picks where the signs go. - Old Coddger

John J. Johnson urges removal of Davis Statue from Capitol

"This is not a new issue, but an old one. The statue and these other symbols have long stood as an affront to many citizens. Now, due to recent events including the murder of a group of human beings as they held a Bible study in church, states around the nation seem ready to address the issue of memorializing the Confederacy on or inside government properties." - JOHN J. JOHNSON

Poetry by Robert Stone: a sonnet for the 4th of July

One web supporting all
- a sonnet for The Fourth of July
Uncertain are the rules that loosely bind
diverse constituencies under law
when many only selfish meaning find
in words whose framers thought without a flaw.

What does not do one’s neighbor good may seem
a benefit worth seizing for right now
but consequences may arise extreme
from faults the thoughtless will not disavow.

Small gestures grow the web of kith and kin
and love declares there should be but one web
supporting all as daily all begin
more seeking joy in flow and calm in ebb.

United questing justice worthy rise,
divided flaunting envy forfeit prize.
- Robert Stone, 4 July 2015

Melvin White and Rollin Hurt's caving adventure, 1870s (part 1)

The first installment of a riveting story that Jim's been researching for some years now, about a spelunking adventure gone wrong in 1870's Adair County.

By Jim

"...they slept from complete exhaustion for several hours, and dreamed of home and mother."

Some of the most gripping lines ever penned by Mark Twain, Adair County's world-famous "grandson of the Shire," appeared in his novel Tom Sawyer. These passages involve Tom and Miss Becky Thatcher (his petite amie du jour) and their harrowing experience in McDougal's Cave.

A similar saga occurred in Adair County in the 1870s, about the time, possibly a few years before, Twain introduced Tom and Becky and their friends to the world in 1876.

A brief description of the Adair County event appeared in the September 20, 1921 edition of the News, that telling of the tale setting the stage thus:

The Hot Dog Issue: Finally a controversy of consequence

Finally a debate on CM we can sink our teeth in

Charles Marshburn writes:
I have tried to stay out of this debate, but my taste buds strain to be heard! A hot dog without sauerkraut and mustard on a poppy seed bun split on the top is not a REAL hot dog! Where were you born outside of Chicago? Don't you have any German roots? Catsup? Plain buns? Indigestion is just around the corner for you! Have a wiener wurst on a proper bun! - Charles Marshburn

Gov. Beshear cautiously optimistic about Aetna-Humana Merger

Gov. Beshear's Statement on Humana-Aetna merger

FRANKFORT, KY (July 3, 2015) - "In addition to the information contained in the news release, I have spoken to Bruce Broussard, CEO of Humana, this morning and Mark Bertolini, CEO of Aetna, earlier this week. Based upon all the information available, I am cautiously optimistic that this merger will be a net positive for Louisville and the Commonwealth. Both Humana and Aetna are progressive, innovative companies in the health care field, and that bodes well for the new entity because of the rapidly changing health care landscape. Mayor Fischer and I look forward to further conversations with both Mr. Broussard and Mr. Bertolini about the details of the transaction and the potential for the growth of jobs in Kentucky. Both of us are also pleased that the Humana Foundation will be separated out of the transaction and will remain in Louisville." - Gov. Steve Beshear.

Tom Chaney: The Lion of Whitehall

Of Writers And Their Books: The Lion of Whitehall. Tom reports that Clay was a founder of Berea College; published an abolitionist paper; helped organize and train the militia which protected the national capital and his friend Lincoln; and served as Lincoln's ambassador to the court of the Czars in St. Petersburg. This column first appeared 1 May 2005.

The Lion of Whitehall

Cassius Marcellus Clay has been a favorite Kentucky character of mine since I first heard the recording of William H. Townsend's The Lion of Whitehall in the late 1950's.

Townsend's speech about the Kentucky abolitionist and President Abraham Lincoln's minister to Russia was given before the Civil War Round Table in Chicago in 1952. The speech is less a factual history than an impression of the personality of Clay; and is a fine example of old-fashioned Kentucky oratory
