Adair County Fair fireworks display

2015-07-04 - Adair County Fairgrounds, 413 Fairgrounds Street, Columbia, KY - Photo Ed Waggener.
The fireworks were spectacular tonight at the Adair County Fairgrounds. The weather was perfect and huge crowds packed all available parking spots on Lindsey hill. Fireworks could be seen from there and other high points around town. The sound was a WWII theme with patriotic music and the words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Celebrate safely this 4th of July

Fireworks are part of many July 4th celebrations, but fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burn and eye injuries.

Remember these tips from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission:
  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
  • Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

Letter: At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

Jon Halsey writes:
In the spirit of the holiday we celebrate today, I will defend to the death your preferences, no matter how wantonly depraved they may be. Segregated catsup and mustard? No onions, no relish, no chili sauce?

"Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
--Jon Halsey, Knifley

It's a fair point, but the house has a 3-year-old, which makes even the mustard a bit controversial. Ketchup is the One True Condiment around here. Except when it isn't. Also, "chili" is the preferred nomenclature. Please. --Pen

Poetry by Tommy Melson: Freedom is celebrated

Freedom is celebrated, and sacrifices recalled
by Tommy Melson
Freedom is celebrated,
And sacrifices recalled.
To those who came before us,
The ones,who gave all.
For our freedom is paid,
in blood,sweat,and tears.
So you can hold the ones you love,
without persecution and fear.
A never ending nation,
pays a never ending cost.
So,thank a veteran today,
and remember the lives lost . . .
- Tommy Melson
