Edsel: If it were in mint condition, worth a lot of money

2015-03-15 - 118 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
According to an entry for the car brand, "Edsel," in Wikipedia, an Edsel from any of its three model years, including its last, 1960, would be worth $100,000. This one wouldn't exactly be called "mint," but Lynn Franklin, the current owner, does point out the beautiful look of the chrome grill with it's trademark "horsecollar" grill and the condition of the car's remarkable dash and instrument panel, a standout feature of the car. Lynn Franklin acquired the car from the collection of Terry Hadley.

Lee Ann Sullivan: Thinks trophies should be kept

Lee Ann Sullivan writes:

In regards to the silent auction of Adair County High School past trophies, this just does not seem right! Who decided what trophies or game balls were selected to be auctioned? As an Adair County High School alumni, it seems to me all trophies were the result of hard work and practice by many students through the last 50 plus years, whether it be basketball, baseball, football, track, band, FFA, or any other academic team or sport. I understand storage could be an issue, but there has to be somewhere these precious momentos could be placed. I don't think I am the only individual with these concerns. These items are a part of ACHS history and accomplishments, and should remain at the school! - Lee Ann Sullivan

How does one have "surplus" trophies?

Seems to me the trophies are part of the history of the school and should remain with the school for future students' inspiration. - JOYCE M. COOMER

Billy Joe Fudge: Hospital Limerick

Hospitals are great with germs and things,
At mending wounds and managing pains.
But the food they bring ya
Will not sustain ya,
So eating comes by way of the veins.

Mike Watson: A Mighty Girl, 99 Years Ago

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

The following story was carried on the first page of the Adair County News, issue of August 9, 1916. The story of a 'Mighty Girl' of the day, one willing to brave the night to help a loved one.
A Paul Revere Ride--The following act of little Louise Grissom, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Grissom, in a sense, was as courageous as the ride made by Paul Revere. Louise is seven years old, and on the night of her adventure she was at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Rachel Grissom, in this place. During the night her grandmother was taken violently ill. There was not a male person about the house, and Mrs. Grissom wanted her son, Dr. Garlin Grissom, who lives two miles out on the Campbellsville pike. He was called by phone, but Louise thought that he was too slow coming, and without telling her grandmother her intentions, she left the room at eleven o'clock, went to the stable, bridled a horse, mounted his bare back and started for the home of her uncle, but when she got in a half miles of the doctor's residence she met him, delivered her message, and the two hurrying together to the sick. Room. Do you know of another seven year old girl, at 11 o'clock at night, who would have the courage that little Louise displayed? - Adair County News, 9 August 1916.

Happy Tail: Hamlet & Daiquiri, goat & horse animal odd couple

Hamlet the pygmy goat and Daiquiri the quarter horse were Peg's Odd Couple. Hamlet was outstanding at King of the Mountain and Daiquiri became Hamlet's partner in an unending performance of an acrobatic skit that might win the $10,000 prize on America's Funniest Videos. There's a bit of a twist to the story and we won't spoil it. This is a very, very special Happy Tail. (Though all of them are wonderful) - CM

When I was a kid I used to spend the weekends at my Cousin Gus' house. Gus always had goats. His wife, Shirley, would milk them and she used the milk in their coffee. She said it helped her hands from getting dry. His sons always drank the milk and although I turned up my nose at it in the beginning I learned I could drink it if it was cold.

Carol Perkins: Snobbery comes in many forms

We all may been seen differently than we think we are, Carol Perkins writes in this treatise on snobbery. Snobbery, she finds comes in many forms, has many different subjects, is shown in many different ways.

As I was pushing my cart very hurriedly down the grocery store aisle, a lady stopped me for a chat. I didn't mind because I hadn't seen her for awhile and we had some catching up to do. In a few minutes another lady maneuvered her cart around ours (we were blocking the aisle) and I said, "Let me get out of your way." She replied, "You're ok."

Tom Chaney: Fragments of Deceit

Fragments of Deceit

The obligation one assumes when one accepts a book from a friend is magnified by at least a factor of two when one writes about that book. I know I have at least two readers, for a pair of those rare birds told me so. More than two have said so, but those two are known for their honesty.

Some months ago -- perhaps years ago -- a friend motored through and flung me a book. Says he, "Read this. You'll like it." I believed him on the strength of past honesty and good judgment.
