Big Al Owens: A visit to West Texas

By Big Al Owens, The Big Rig Trucker

I was recently in a remote town in West Texas that seems to produce some of the finest musicians in the World. I was in Lubbock, Texas and was able to visit the Buddy Holly Museum.

I have included a photo of the many talented musical influences of many generations. In 2014, Sir Paul McCartney visited and played in Lubbock. Mr McCartney said that much of the Beatles early music was influenced by Buddy Holly.

I had a wonderful visit at the museum, and was accompanied by my good friend Troy, and Norm and Carol from Minnesota. We also visited the grave site.

If anyone noticed that I spelled Buddy Holly name wrong, and can explain to other readers why his stage name was spelled differently, I would appreciate your help. I really appreciate all of the magnificent feedback I get from the opportunities that I am able to share with you.

A winter storm warning has been issued with a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain to heavy snow this afternoon through Thursday afternoon. The National Weather Service said snowfall could be heavy at times with some areas getting a foot or more.

Road Crews Ready to Rumble Against Winter Weather

Crews are ready and salt stores are in good supply

By Wes Watt, Public Information Officer
KY Transportation Officer, District 3, Bowling Green, KY

Bowling Green, KY (4 Mar 2015) - Road crews are prepared for another round of winter weather expected to hit later this evening. Crews have all shifts covered and it will most likely be early tonight before they head out on to the roadways. Forecasters are predicting sleet and significant snow accumulation to roll in late this afternoon following a day full of heavy rain. Anti-icing pretreatment was not an option with this winter storm due to all the rain.

Several predictions showing between 5-10 inches of snow have been forecasted for our district, but a greater threat could be icy conditions as a result of colder temperatures following all the rain. Ice creates a difficult challenge as snow plows have a hard time scraping ice off the roadways, much more so than snow.

Region Begins Update of 2016 Hazard Mitigation Plan

By: Judy Hachey, LCADD

The Lake Cumberland Area Development District (LCADD) is in the process of updating the 2016 Lake Cumberland Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. The first Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan meeting will be held on March 26, 2015 at 6:30 central time at LCADD, located at 2384 Lakeway Drive in Russell Springs. The meeting will take place prior to LCADD's regular board meeting. The public is encouraged to attend.

LCADD represents Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Pulaski, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne counties. The geographic scope of the Lake Cumberland Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan includes 14 incorporated cities and all unincorporated land within the ten-county district. The Plan, which is updated every five years, forms the foundation for long-term strategies to reduce disaster losses and break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction and repeated damage.

LCADD's geographic area is affected by many natural hazards, including severe storms with hail, lightning and tornadoes, floods, wildfires, dam/levee failures, extreme summer and winter weather events, and more. The effects of these natural hazards can be reduced through hazard mitigation planning.

CJEStephens/Mr. Thomas: Emergency preparedness underway

From Adair County Judge/Executive: "We are in preparedness mode and if the weather events proceed as predicted this could be, once again, a real challenge to the residents of Adair County."

Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens has announced that after a winter weather briefing with the National Weather Service he is advising the residents of Adair County to expect mostly increasing rain conditions today as we are currently under a flood watch.

Judge Stephens said that, for now, heavy rains now and into the afternoon with flooding - which is already occurring, are the biggest threat. In the 6pm-7pmCT time frame, Adair Countians should be prepared for heavy sleet, maybe as much as one-half inch, and then, overnight, as much as 7-8 inches of snow could accumulate.

Flood Tips from Greg Thomas

Tips for before and after flooding events, including general construction advice, and some specifics for dealing with the aftermath if your home should experience flooding.

By Greg Thomas, Adair County Emergency Management

Before a Flood: To prepare for a flood, you should...
  • Avoid building in a flood prone area unless you elevate and reinforce your home.
  • Elevate the furnace, water heater, and electric panel if susceptible to flooding.
  • Install "check valves" in sewer traps to prevent floodwater from backing up into the drains of your home.
  • Contact community officials to find out if they are planning to construct barriers (levees, beams, floodwalls) to stop floodwater from entering the homes in your area.
  • Seal the walls in your basement with waterproofing compounds to avoid seepage.
