RRW Comment on NBC Newsman Bryan Williams

'No doubt he was way out of line, but I know a lot of people who tend to let their fish stories or their winnings at the Casinos grow as time goes by.' - Ralph Waggener

By Ralph Waggener

Bryan Williams made a terrible mistake in saying he was in more danger than he was.

Why? He most likely doesn't know. I'm sure he was scared because as I understand, the Chopper he was on was hit by bullets, but not RPG fire.

Compared to the news we get every day on national news programs he would have been in line by exaggerating his story. News we get from TV has to be exaggerated or most news personalities would all have to quit. I'm not defending Williams for what he did, but just pointing out that we are quick to destroy anyone who makes a mistake.

Carol Perkins: Playing by the Rules

By: Carol Perkins

Guy was talking to his sister on the phone. I heard him say, "If he wants to participate in life, he is going to have to play by the rules." I suddenly realized how profound Guy could be with his observances. "Did you make that up?" I asked him.

"I do have some deep thoughts occasionally," he replied.

Naturally, I thought about the meaning of this statement outside the context he was using it and came up with the notion that playing by the rules is definitely a necessity for living in society, but sometimes we set our own rules and they can get in the way of life. By inflecting certain rules on ourselves we can often be caught in unusual situations. Here is an example of that.

I learned early on in my texting existence that a colon is eyes and a semi-colon is a winky face--valuable info, to be sure. I learned that some people use a hyphen for a nose, then parenthesis (depending on mood), but some people skip the hyphen altogether, creating a grizzly and grotesque visage that only a mother could love. :-) vs. :)

The most important thing I learned, however, is that our society's generalized gender roles still apply. Please allow me to use sending flowers to draw a parallel: It is quite okay for a guy to send flowers to his girlfriend. Also, it's cool for a girl to send flowers to anyone. (Girls, like flowers, are delicate and pretty and smell nice.) Conversely, it is not, in our American Ethos, considered "normal" behavior for a man to send his buddy a bouquet of begonias or a sparkling silver-tipped rose. If I had made these comparisons earlier, I would not have texted a smiley face emoticon to my friend, Shane, many years ago. But--alas--the ignorance of my texting youth prevailed :-/

By Peg Schaeffer

In July, 2014 I adopted out a female Pit Bull puppy to a young girl from Radcliff, KY. She named the puppy Petunia. As I do with all dogs adopted from us I inserted a microchip. This microchip proved to be a benefit to this pup.

After Petunia had been adopted her owner called to say she had changed her name to "Ink". So I entered the name change in the data base. A few months I got a call from AKC, the organization that the microchips are registered with, saying that Ink had been found in a school yard. I called Ink's owner and left a message.

Tips for ACT testing for high school juniors

FRANKFORT, KY (6 Feb 2015) - Juniors in the state’s public high schools will take the ACT on March 3, 2015. These tips from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) may be helpful.

  • Read, read, read. Most of the ACT is based on reading. The more you read, the better you’ll do
  • Take advantage of any free ACT prep courses offered by your school or by local colleges and libraries
  • Take practice tests online or buy practice tests for use at home
  • Familiarize yourself with the sections and directions.
  • Get plenty of rest the night before, and eat a good breakfast that morning
  • Remember to take No. 2 pencils and a calculator if your school doesn’t provide them
Students should remember to put their Social Security number on the ACT so KHEAA will know if they qualify for a bonus award through the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES) program.

KHEAA is the state agency that promotes college awareness, provides free college planning materials and administers state student aid programs, including KEES. To learn how to plan and prepare for higher education, go to Gotocollege.ky.gov. For more information about Kentucky scholarships and grants, visit kheaa.com; write KHEAA, P.O. I Started to Talk About John Sandford

A couple of weeks ago I started to write about the new John Sandford novel Rough Country with its detective Virgil Flowers.

I got distracted by Sandford's reference to a musky fishing tournament wherein he promises to make "musky fishing out to be a much less stupid activity than it actually is."
