Reader has questions about last days of Sulphur Well Hotel

Rob Phillips writes:
Sir, my Mom's family is from around Glasgow. I remember remember summer trips down from Muncie, Indiana to romp around their farm, which in the early years, had no indoor plumbing. My Uncle Hobbart took me, my brother & Dad to the hotel (probably in 1970?) to the remains of the hotel. It was like everyone basically evacuated the hotel & didn't return for their stuff. Their were hams still hanging, clothes in dressers & everyday items still laying around through the former hotel. Could you provide some answers as to why it was abandoned like this? I've wondered about this for 40+ years. And yes, my uncle tricked me with getting a big drink of the "healthful" sulfur water. Any answers you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Poetry by Robert Stone: Too High to soothe an empty heart

Too high to soothe an empty heart
- a sonnet reflecting on "100 Saints You Should Know" by Kate Fodor
A hundred words of love are not enough
to substitute for one soft human touch.
Regardless of hard training to be tough,
unrecognized requests may prove too much.

Some higher power may exist on high
but much too high to soothe an empty heart.
Some inner strength may seek the open sky
but torn by expectations come apart.

Not grand designs but accidents set lives
on courses unforeseen both good and bad.
Not condemnation but calm help arrives
to guide unrushed the soul from sad to glad.

Desires rejected often catch us up,
distilled those longings bitter fill our cup.
- Robert Stone, 25 July 2014
