Remembers 1971 storm night as though it were yesterday

Linda Waggener writes:
I remember the storm as if it were yesterday, fearful most of all for the safety of the tiny baby boy, Pen, who'd been entrusted to my care just a couple of months before. He and I spent the mostly sleepless night in Columbia where Pete and Edith Walker lived at that time while Pete and Ed went out to report on the damage. Thankfully we were all safe that night but we joined the community mourning those six who were lost. --linda

The Trail Town initiative for Columbia-Adair County
met Monday evening, April 28, 2014, to set committees and define a vision statement. Andrea O'Bryan, right, from the Corps of Engineers helped the group focus on the process steps required to establish any trails that propose to enter Green River Park and Wildlife Management Area (WLM). Right now there are two entry points on the Adair side of Green River Lake, the boating trail on the river itself and the road entry near Holmes Bend. In the photo, she points to the area on a map of Adair County with Joel Peterson, left, and Betty Knifley.Organizational meeting report for details on what the Trail Town effort is about can be found at this link: Is Columbia the next Trail Town - USA?

Brad Byington: A bedtime bear story

The night the channel freighter innocently put the frighteners on the writer - a memory his travel mate still thinks is funny

By Brad Byington

I enjoyed the story very much. If I could, it reminds me a something that happened also about the same time.

Sandy was a neighbor I grew up with. He and I were in the same class. Even after we were older we sometimes did things together.

Carol Perkins: Mama Don't Cook No More

Carol Perkins has discovered a whole new allergy, 'the stove allergy' - a good one to have, she says, and a good subject for a country music song (first dibs, all rights reserved by columnist). While it may not be contagious, she noticed a lot of her friends have it, too. The Stove Allergy is helping the restaurant industry in Metcalfe County thrive. Carol Perkins column is weekly, usually of a Sunday.

The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins/Travelogue: Critique of Branson

By Carol Perkins

I have a new allergy. It's call "stove" allergy and will not allow me to stand close to a stove or an oven without breaking out in hives and wheezing. Sounds like a good allergy to have, as far as I'm concerned, but Guy has had a negative reaction to it. Suddenly, "Mama don't cook no more." (Sounds like a country music song.)
