The Daily Haiku connection to Mark Twain

By Robert Stone
I have wondered if anyone wondered who that Chambers Stevens is, the one who is mentioned below the daily haiku. Seeing the note about the birthday of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835) suggested this would be a good time to let folks know a couple of things about him.

Chambers was born June 10, 1964 and the 1000 day haiku countdown will end the day before his birthday. He was a co-founder of the Nashville (TN) Shakespeare Festival in 1988. I was there at the first performance of the first play.

Chambers is a playwright and the author of "Twain and Shaw Do Lunch," based on the only meeting of Mark Twain with George Bernard Shaw. Chambers has one son, Twain, who is named for Mark Twain. - Robert Stone

Sketch of Lampton and Clemens families

In honor of the birthday of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Mark Twain (November 30, 2012 - April 21, 2012), I submit the sketch on the Lampton and Clemens families of Adair County as written by Judge Rollin T. Hurt and which appear in his History of Adair County (along with some additional notes by editor). - MIKE WATSON

By Judge Rollin T. Hurt, with notes by Mike Watson
From Judge's Hurt's History of Adair County

The Lampton and Clemens Families

The Lamptons were among the earliest comers to Adair, but the date of their coming is forgotten. Lewis Lampton, for many years, was the proprietor and conductor of what would now be denominated a hotel, in the town of Columbia, but in the day of its operation it bore the name of a tavern. It was famous for the social functions which were held under its roof in the olden time and was the popular resort of the elite of society in those days. Doubtless, it was all that a tavern in Columbia at that day should have been. The circumstance in connection with its proprietor, which tradition has most carefully preserved, was the effort on his part to chastise Jesse White. 1

Christmas in Columbia 2012 lights shine bright - for less money

Going Green. Retrofitting for the Future: Adair County High School Energy Students hope to brighten Columbia, KY Public Square at a lower cost this year with modern LED bulbs in Old Fashioned Lamps
Click on headline for story with photos

By Duane Bonifer
News from LWC & ACHS Energy Career Technology Academy

COLUMBIA, KY - When area residents watch this year's Christmas in Columbia parade process through the Public Square Saturday night, they will see the event through a different light.

That's because Adair County High School students in Heather Spoon's energy class began an experiment Thursday with light bulbs on Columbia's Public Square. The students and Spoon began replacing the dozen lampposts' metal halide bulbs with light-emitting diode bulbs - also known as LED bulbs.

The students will monitor whether the LED bulbs emit more light at a lower cost, which would reduce the the city's energy bill. The LED bulbs were purchased through a grant Lindsey Wilson College received from the Appalachian Regional Commission for the college's Energy Technology Career Academy, which Spoon directs at Adair County High School. - Duane Bonifer
