Poetry by Robert Stone: Not in my mind, a villanelle

Not in my mind
- a villanelle about not having a clear idea
Where is that poem I would write,
the one about to wait then do,
not in my mind up late last night.

Thinking of process I invite
the how, the why, the what, the who,
where is that poem I would write

I think I may, I think I might
not finish up in deadline screw,
not in my mind up late last night.

Dim and yet clear it was in sight
but later on away it flew.
Where is that poem I would write

Morning is here with sunshine bright
confirming what I know is true,
not in my mind up late last night.

Excuses tend to be quite trite
but what to say I have no clue.
Where is that poem I would write
not in my mind up late last night.

- Robert Stone, 14 October 2012

Kentucky Color: The harvest

Click on headline for essay with photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

My Dogwood drupes are rapidly disappearing thanks to Blue Jays, Blackbirds, and a plethora of species of birds. They come in droves and they come individually to dine on, drop and dislodge this year's bumper crop of Dogwood seed.

Quite a joy to watch and hear their feeding frenzy and then occasionally a rain of blue, Jaybird feathers will fall from the nearby pine as a sobering reminder to man and Jaybird alike that Ol' Chickenhawks must partake of sustenance, also.

A very moving documentary plays out in the panorama of our lives each and every hour of each and every day. It is truly a detriment to our humanity and spiritual well-being that we spend our lives seeking knowledge, meaning, and contentment in a manmade facade of perceived learning, entertainment, and reality while ignoring the majesty, might, and magnificence of the creation which longs to wrap us in peace, pleasantness and the pageantry of place. - Billy Joe Fudge

Even though in my old age, my eyesight has "gone to pot," I am blessed with a remarkable memory of things that have been a part of my long and mostly happy life.

One of the things I enjoy doing as I sit in my recliner and daydream is to try to recall some of my earliest recollections. Try it sometime and then share it with someone.

Playing for Pizza

I was on the Caverna High School football team for one year - 1952, the longest season on record. In those days we played six-man football. You might recall that the six-man variety had a peculiar rule. When a team got 45 points on its opponent, the game was over.
