Wants Secrets of Crepe Myrtle held at night

Comments re article 55078 ACGC presents Master Gardener Beth Rutherfords Wants Secrets of Crepe Myrtle at night

Someshybody writes:
Why can't this, along with other activities. be offered at another time besides daytime hours when many of us are still at work? -- Someshybody
Thanks, Someshybody - Maybe it can be done. Ill ask Ms. Armitage reverently - not in a gotcha manner - using our most wimpish deference, and maybe she'll deign to do as you ask. Don't think the gardeners were trying to limit the audience. They aren't public officials scheduling daytime meetings to limit attendance and keep the public awareness down. Quite the opposite: They more often are accused of revolutionary ideas - of stirring things up. - EW

Cynthia, Thanks very much for writing -- we agree, ColumbiaMagazine gets some great images from terrific local photographers. And, you can "Like" any photo on ColumbiaMagazine and let your friends and relatives know how great it is, but it's one click deeper than the front page. Because of the way FaceBook works, it's tough for us to provide that link on the ever-changing front page, but every photo and story on our main page also has a link that says: "Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo." When you click that link, you'll be on a page with just that one photo, and you'll get easy one-click sharing links for Facebook, Google Plus, Pinterest, and Twitter.

Sad word of the passing of an Adair County icon

CM file photo at left, of Jake Willis with one of his 'smaller' green tomatoes
A complete obituary will be posted when received.
If heaven is a lot like Garlin, Jake Willis will be happy there, though he will be greatly missed by all of us.

For decades of seasons, the first news that Jake Willis' tomatoes were in was as joyous to his multitude of devoted customers as the bells of Christmas are to children.

He was a master seller, drawing buyers to his shady stand simply by dint of the unexcelled quality he offered, the good measure, the fair prices he charged and his sincerity. Shoppers came - all on word of mouth testimonials.

If the meticulously tended tomato crop at the corner of Liberty Road and Concord Road should continue, it will always be reminder of this one-of-a-kind Adair County man.

It will also be the comforting marking place it has become to the multitude of annual reunioners for whom the happy sight of Jake Willis' perfect patch of tomatoes meant the unofficial gateway to Home, to Burton Ridge.

It's an enviable legacy he leaves, this man who could coax the very best from the earth. - EW
