Victoria Pike: Why are we having so many boil water advisories lately???

Victoria Pike writes:
Ed, please somebody tell me why we are having so many boil water advisories here lately? We had to boil for about three days out this way not too long ago. It seems like we have one on here about everyday now. What is going on? - Victoria Pike
Your question is beyond my level of engineering I'd lay it to Woody's styrofoam bear or all those Greater Bliss fat cattle stomping the ground; maybe it's the roaring of the ogre, Bud Mullins, in his sinkhole - could even be it has something to do with all the construction going on. Maybe someone very clever can answer your question. It worries me.- EW

Scenic Henry County, KY: Sharp's Grocery, Lockport

2012-10-07 - Lockport, KY - Photo by Tom Waggener\'s cellphone. Sharp's Grocery, 6919 River Rd, Lockport, Henry County, KY, is a seemingly timeless place, with this bitt of Americana memorabilia, a sign with the Marlboro Man promoting cigarettes - a figure right out of the half a century ago. It was one of the sights and stops for the GABRAKY statewide bike ride across Kentucky which made it's way to Lindsey Wilson College for brunch and a final stop at Dale Hollow Resort Park on Dale Hollow, the Tennessee/KY border lake south of Burkesville in Cumberland County, KY.

In this second of three, maybe more (previously announced as two) articles, our Metcalfe County and Beyond heroine and friends board the Conquest for a cruise to Montego Bay, Jamaica
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Special eligibles trips are all about Good Deals!

By Carol Perkins

My friends and I stood on the top deck of the Conquest and sailed out of the Mississippi River and into the Caribbean toward our first destination: Montego Bay, Jamaica. We would have two full days at sea before arrival.

Our five rooms were in a row on the balcony side of the ship. Our first priority was getting the aluminum doors unlocked between them so we could talk, drink coffee, read when we had alone time, star watch, and swap stories.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Legacy not sold, a sonnet

Legacy not sold
- a sonnet reflecting on "Red," a play about artist Mark Rothko by John Logan
Deluded self yet still aware of art
with disconnects between what thought what said,
will not stop questioning the role of heart
to spur unlearned to see beyond plain red.

Engaging help but always wary weighted
with civilizing touchstones of the past,
will never speed creating what is fated
to be the monument that lasts at last.

Dismissing truth while holding to its worth
with dogged reconsideration bold,
will hinder death but little yet will birth
to live a legacy that was not sold.

Resist the audience that only wants
to rest in comfort in familiar haunts.

- Robert Stone, 7 October 2012

By Celia Stuart

I haven't lived in Adair County but about 3 1/2 years, but I just want to say that I met one of the nicest young men here some time ago and last night I saw him on the Jay Leno show. He is the epitome of a young person who really cares about his country and other people around him. He is always so calm, nice and just so sincere. That young man is Cody Meyer and he is a true Hero. Chuck Hinman: IJMA 039 - School days bugaboos

Chuck Hinman, It's Just Me Again 039: School days bugaboos -- choosing up sides
The next earlier Chuck Hinman Story: - IJMA 001 : Shoplifting story

By Chuck Hinman

My school days experiences both in New Hope country grade school and Liberty (Nebraska) High School were generally wonderful.

There was one thing I dreaded like the plague. It was when a sport was to be played which required two sides. Usually the two best athletes in the school were the team captains and they were to choose their team from the assortment of boys available. I always dreaded that because of the likely embarrassment of being chosen last or next to last. I wasn't athletically gifted. It was like as if I, and a couple rag-tag others were booby prizes, and they had to choose between us because there wasn't anyone left to choose. All the jocks had been chosen.
