The Shock of Reminder

When I attend the theatre I expect a good story. I expect that story to tie in with my own knowledge and to cause me to view the world in startling new ways. And Then They Came for Me did just that for me at Kentucky Repertory Theatre last Saturday night [2007].

Poetry by Robert Stone: Monster puppeteer, a sonnet

Monster puppeteer
- a sonnet reflecting on "Death and the Maiden," a play by Ariel Dorfman
The hurt of many years ago still burns
enough to sometimes fantasize revenge
and while detail both sharp and clear returns,
no resolution satisfies each binge.

A chance encounter may provide a while
when victim has the upper hand to play
and while all outcomes mind and mood beguile,
no ending shows one how injustice slay.

Forgiving and forgetting need new ground
with future choices strong with growing pull
and while achievements doubters may astound,
no last resolve of hope fills future full.

You but create your monster puppeteer
when you see justice as inflicting fear.

Carol Perkins: Memories of Uncle Rollin (Oscar) Sullivan

. . . In an ironic twist, his doctor, not knowing about Oscar's death, called his daughter on the morning of the funeral with the test results of what had been causing such weakness. 'He has a rare and aggressive form of leukemia.' When she told about the conversation, all I could think was, 'Not any more. He doesn't have it anymore'. . . . On his closed coffin was a lovely flower arrangement with his mandolin on one side and his well-worn Bible on the other. - Carol Perkins
A reflection on the life of her relative - a Great Metcalfe Countian and a great American, 'Oscar,' of 'Lonzo & Oscar,' the last surviving son of an enormously talented Metcalfe County family, the children of the late Jim and Ethel Sullivan of Cedar Flat, Metcalfe County, KY. He was the uncle of Carol Perkins, regular Sunday contributor to ColumbiaMagazine.com. An extraordinarily beautiful tribute. -Ed Waggener

By Carol Sullivan Perkins

Please allow me the next few minutes to reflect on the life and recent death of my uncle, Rollin "Oscar" Sullivan who died last Friday at the age of 93. Of the eleven children born to Jim and Ethel Sullivan, Rollin was the only living sibling.

Many of you will recall Saturday nights in front of the radio or TV, waiting for the Grand Ole Opry and perhaps for the comedy team of Lonzo and Oscar, both of whom were my father's brothers and grew up in the Cedar Flat community of Metcalfe County.

Although a comedy team with "I'm My Own Grandpa" selling four million records in the 50's, they were both very serious musicians. Oscar played a mean mandolin and Johnny's specialty was the guitar, but like all the Sullivan boys, they could play wind instruments, too.

The Whitehurst Diaries: Sunflower Memories

'Everything about sunflowers pleases me: their robustness and willingness to grow in spite of heat, drought, wind, poor soil or neglect . . . I walk along the row, hearing the hum of bees, recalling other years and other gardens. Should I grow too old to prune roses or painstakingly weed the perennials, still I will toss out a handful of sunflower seeds and delight in their glorious exuberance.' - Sharon Whitehurst
Click on headline for complete essay, accompanied by photo(s) of the species, which the author finds flourishes at her home in Gradyville, KY, as well as Kansas and other places she has visited or been.

By Sharon Whitehurst

My Grampa Mac grew sunflowers, a few seeds flung along the edges of the field corn piece, a few more in a tidy row in the fenced garden below the back yard. If there were miniature sunflowers or exotic colors at the time, we didn't know about them. Grampa Mac's sunflowers were the tall, sturdy classics--bright yellow petals surrounding a center disk of brown. The seeds were large, grey and white striped.

Grampa Mac used his Barlow knife to slice the sunflower heads from the drying stalks. Saved twine from feed sacks served to suspend the seed-heavy rounds in the far corner of the covered porch. During the snow-bound months of January and February, one head at a time was placed on an old metal table. The sparrows and bluejays who feasted on this offering were easily viewed through the living room window.

Husbands, Stay Out Of The Kitchen: Advice For Retirement

I retired in August 1985 after working 35 years at Phillips Petroleum Company. When retirement came we were living at 7714 Lacy Hill in Houston, Texas.

In the months before I retired, I pondered what "important" thing I might do as my first official act of retirement -- like "something for humanity." But, the thing that came to mind most often was to clean the garage! Heaven knows it needed it but that seemed so mundane.

Mark Silas Tackitt: A Royse descendant who's his own grandpa

Wherein Mark Silas Tackitt tells of how his trail back to his Royse Roots in Adair County, to visit the Royse Cemetery sometime in early October. And he verifies in this story - for a fact - that Royse City, the capital of Rockwall County, Texas, was founded by an Adair Countian, as was so much of the Texas and the rest of the West.

By Mark Silas Tackitt

Oh, dear. I have become my own grand pa. Recently saw this brief CM story:
Worth reading: A story in Sunday, October 8, 2006, Lexington Herald-New features Battle of Perryville re-enactor Mark Tackitt of Seattle, WA, whose great great grandfather, Confederate Lt. Colonel Silas Tackitt, was born in Adair County, KY. To read the entire story, Click Here. The story has a delightful ending. (from ColumbiaMagazine.com 2006-10-09 03:08:16)
I remember that article. That was from my first ever visit to Kentucky when I was the chief of staff to the commanding general for the Confederate side. My rank at that event was Lt. Colonel. I wasn't born in Adair County. I hail from Orange County, CA. By coincidence, I became a Kentucky Colonel on that trip for my efforts in making that reenactment occur. I had wanted to make it to Columbia on that trip, but didn't have sufficient time to do more than drive through. I was very disappointed.
