Checkers are a new game at ACES

Checkerboards have been replaced with computers for many, but at Adair County Elementary School, a visit to the playground will find that kids still enjoy simple things, playing checkers the way it was traditionally played in this country
Click on headline for story with photo(s)

By Debbie Cowan A familiar image of times forgotten and left behind is that of folks gathered around a makeshift checkerboard at the country store. Many friends were made and problems solved over an impromptu game of checkers.

Checkerboards have been replaced with computers, online friends are the norm for children today and the simple things are sometimes overlooked in our fast-paced, technology rich society.

More to Col. Casey legacy: Wife Jane deserves remembrance

Jane and William Casey were the great grandparents of Mark Twain

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

I appreciated Ken Hill's thoughts as well as the background of Col. Wm Casey. But, I would like to add that William's wife, Jane Montgomery Casey, had a big part in the early history of this county and I think it is only right to give her credit also.

She helped defend Montgomery Station when she was young and some of her family members were killed. Then she married Casey and settled at Logan's Fort where she gave birth to five children and then trudged through the wilderness to help establish Casey's first station (off what is now KY 551 in Adair County) and finally the house that still exists on West 80/Edmonton Road, Columbia, KY.

Comment: Spay Neuter Program

Misty Claywell writes:
After reading the paper this morning my heart just broke for all the animals at the Green River Animal Shelter because their fates have just been sealed.

Though I completely support spaying or neutering your pets, people aren't adopting at the current $50 price now.. why would the Fiscal Court think that raising the adoption rate to $112 would help the situation?

I hope the County is ready to spend more than the previous $80,000 that was stated because at the prices listed I can't see the general public being able to afford to adopt.

- Misty Claywell
Thanks Misty Claywell. Fiscal court was faced with a difficult choice.

What's In A Name? Colonel William Casey Elementary School

'Let's embrace our history and let the new school be a new Colonel William Casey Elementary School!' Ken Hill writes. It should be a foregone conclusion, but the Adair County School Board hasn't yet designated a new name. Ken Hill bases his recommendation on Col. Casey's place in history. Reason enough. But he'll likely find support from even more to continue the name based simply on the grit shown by Colonel William Casey Elementary's teachers, principals and staff to overcome extreme adversity and continue their dedication to the children despite the handicap of antiquated facilities. Continuing the name would be tremendous validation of their exemplary perserverance and character, as well as a reason enough: The historical significance of the great icon of Adair County History, Col. Wm Casey, the man

By Ken Hill
Editorial commentary

Having not grown up in the Adair County area, I often wondered who Colonel William Casey was. I knew it was the name of a great school, but I didn't know the origin. With the area's rich Civil War history, I assumed Casey was of that era. I asked a couple of folks over the years, and learned nothing.

Arithmetic & Health: Link to Bloomberg story, public well being

Your Health

There's a fascinating story on BloombergBusiness Week's website those who believe nature curses us with bad health, poor nutrition, diabetes, obesity, and bad economic numbers won't want to read.

Those who don't want to do the math, and delight in a continued closed minds won't like this.

It's about what's happening when a great city takes on the nature's biggest health problem and a easily preventable health issue: Obesity. See the story at this link: Bloomberg story on obesity. If arithmetic doesn't frighten you. Only if you're willing to look at the way to change the real cost of health care. - Ed Waggener
