Editorial: No time for night time mudhole water haulers Why we insist on Street & Number for Venues. It's enough to make a Tea Partier out of an old New Dealer. Too many bureaucratic employees do things to perpetuate themselves. "They can't do their jobs because they do things to keep their jobs." We call them "night time water haulers," from the old story about the farmer who told a neighbor that he was giving up pulling people out of a mudhole in front of his house even though he was getting rich doing it. When asked why, he said, "It's killing me. I can't get any sleep." His neighbor said he'd never seen any traffic by at night. The farmer replied, "No, that's when I have to haul the water to the mudhole." If we got the night time mudhole water hauling people out of the way - they are in so many bureaucracies - , governmental, collegiate, lumbering corporate chair warmers - we'd solve a lot of economic problems in a hurry. There's a lot of work in the world which ought not be did. The world has changed. "Directions" are so rarely needed, when Google, Yahoo!, and Bing do it for free! A lesson for the water haulers: There's still plenty of useful work to do in the world. Get out of the way. A lesson for administrators: Find the 'water haulers' and if you can't fire them - give them a raise and get them out of the way! At least get them out of the way. -ED WAGGENER 2012-09-06 06:02:28 | Comments | Printable version
