Funeral services are Friday, September 7, 2012 at 1pmCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, with Pastor Bob Cutler officiating. Interment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. Visitation after 4pmCT, Thursday, September 6, 2012, at the funeral home.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Dr. Michelle Tucker, associate professor of social work at Campbellsville University, received the Non-Tenured Faculty Award at the first chapel of the semester Wednesday, August 29. 2012.

Tucker, who has served at CU since 2008, was presented the award for her outstanding loyalty and commitment to Campbellsville University.

CU employs Dale Smothers as admissions counselor

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - -Dale Smothers of Campbellsville, KY, has been employed as an admissions counselor in the Office of Admissions at Campbellsville University, according to an announcement from Dr. Michael V. Carter, president of Campbellsville University.

Smothers is the husband of Krissy (Cooper) Smothers, a 2008 and 2010 graduate of Campbellsville University. He is the son of Colton and Tammy Smothers of Lebanon, KY

. Smothers will recruit from the Louisville area including: Anderson, Bullitt, Franklin, Hardin, Jefferson, LaRue, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby and Spencer counties.

Smothers is a 2006 graduate of Marion County High School, and graduated from Campbellsville University in 2010 with degrees in biology and business. He was previously employed by TransAmerica Life Insurance as an agent from 2010 to 2012.

ACHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes will host tailgate fundraiser

The ACHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes will host a tailgate meal/party at 5:15pmCT, Friday, September 7, 2012, in the parking lot behind the the Adair County High School Gym, 526 Indiana Drive, Columbia, KY. The meal is prior to the Indians vs. Breckinridge football game It includes hamburger or two hotdogs, baked beans, dessert, and drink for $5. Proceeds go to help the Brooks family. Kevin and Sherry Brooks and their five children have faced many hardships while trying to start a church in Utah. All are welcome. Remember to wear red to show Adair County spirit. - Mark Fudge

News from Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority

FRANKFORT, KY - Twenty-one area students have been named Senator Jeff Green Scholars by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) for their outstanding academic performance in high school. Students earn this designation by achieving a 4.0 grade point average each year of high school and scoring at least a 28 composite on the ACT.

Area students who earned this prestigious designation are:
  • Adair County High School: Eddie Franklin, Kyle Mann, Meredith Murrell.
  • Glasgow High School: Robert Bell
  • Green County High School: Annette Dangerfield, Samuel Janes, Zachary Leftwich, Rebecca VanMeter.
  • Metcalfe County High School: Kristin Compton, Logan Matney.
  • Russell County High School: Kristina Burton, Kyle Hunter, Kenisha Kelsey, Jacob Phelps.
  • Somerset Christian School: Camden White.
  • Taylor County High School: Campbell Bishop, Matthew Hart, Alexandra Hezik, Abigail Phillips, Rachel Riggs, Erin Steele.
These students have also earned $2,500 a year in Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES) awards.

Mr. Wayne Brewington, 74, Green Co., KY (1937-2012)

He was a native of Ohio, and the head of a large, respected family. He leaves 28 direct living descendants. Mr. Brewington had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Methodist Faith. He was a retired U.S. Airforce Veteran and worked for Chrysler Corporation.

Mr. Wayne Brewington was born September 5, 1937 in Wilmington, Ohio to the late Donald and Mildred Lane Brewington, He departed this life Saturday, September 1, 2012 at the St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio, having attained the age of 74 years, 11 months and 26 days. The funeral service was held at 1pmCT, Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Foster-Toler-Curry Funeral Home, 209 W. Court Street, Greensburg, KY, with Rev. Gary Ervin officiating. Interment is in the Wilson Cemetery. The Patriot Guard Riders provided an escort.

Columbia has a lot going for it with the Columbia/Adair County Airport, C/AC Airport Board Member John Rarey told the Columbia City Council last night in a successful request to get the city to restore $7,700 in funding to the facility. The vote to restore the funding was 6-0, with all Council Members - June Parson, Jim Hadley, Tony Grider, Robert Flowers, Linda Waggener and Craig Dean - present and voting for the action at the Council's September meeting, Tuesday (because of Labor Day), September 4, 2012.

Students and parents may now access a direct link to The ACT Question of the Day and ACT Word of the Day via the Adair County High School, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY 42728, (270) 384-2571, website. The high school website is also linked to the Adair County district website for quick reference. Adair County High School website

These sites are updated daily and students can actually work through the questions each day. If they choose a wrong answer, a tutorial will guide them to the correct answer.

ACHS technology teacher Chad Parnell has posted large ACT icons and a link to the Khan Academy on the school site. The Khan Academy is a free site where students and parents can learn almost anything by utilizing over 3300 videos on any subject including arithmetic, physics, engineering, finance, history and much, much more.

COLUMBIA, KY - The Kentucky State Police, Post 15, Columbia, KY which provides coverage for Washington, Marion, Taylor, Casey, Russell, Green, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton, Cumberland and Adair counties will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints at locations approved by the Kentucky State Police Policy and Procedures Manual. Trooper Island Golf Scramble is Oct. 12, 2012, at Rosewood CC

Proceeds will benefit Trooper Island, Inc.. Trooper Island on Dale Hollow Lake, is a free summer camp for disadvantaged kids

COLUMBIA, KY - The 2012 Post 15 Trooper Island Golf Scramble will be held Friday, October 12, 2012 at Rosewood Country Club, 520 Fairway Drive, Lebanon, Marion County, KY. The tournament will begin at 9amET/8amCT, with a shotgun start with registration beginning at 8amET/7amCT.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams and to the winner for Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive. The cost is $240.00 per team consisting of 4 players (A, B, C, D). The price includes green fees, cart and lunch.

All money raised will be given to Trooper Island, Inc. Trooper Island is a free summer camp for disadvantaged children ages 10-12 funded solely by donations and fundraisers. Over 700 children attend annually.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Indians traveled to Hickory Hills Golf Course, 1552 Short Town Road, Liberty, KY, to take on the Casey County Rebels. The Indians remained perfect on the season with a 163 to 210 win. The Indians match play record now stands at a perfect 15-0 on the season.

Alex Durham led the Indians with a round of 39. Riley Grant and Daniel Rarey carded 40's, Trey Garmon's 44, Korey Hundley's 45, and Austin Cundiff's 48 finished out the scoring for the Indians.
