Poetry by Robert Stone: When Cool September

When cool September
Some lines of verse from 53 years ago by Robert Stone
When cool September with his first chill breeze
Has left the leaves but loosely on the trees
To patiently await the winds to come --
The stronger, sharper, colder winds which drum
Incessantly upon the withered leaves
Until the last most stubborn leaf receives
A blast of air which tasks too much its power
To hold unto its branch another hour.

Some old verse of mine to welcome September: - July 3, 1959
These lines were written in imitation of Geoffrey Chaucer's style: "Whan that Aprille with his shoores soote" -- opening line of The Canterbury Tales - Robert Stone

It's a 1961 version, with over 4,000 heavily illustrated pages. It's listed for sale now in the Books section of CM Classifieds. It's a really nice copy, without a single handwritten notation in it.

I remember as a kid exploring the Dug Hill and also the old Dug Hill across the way.

A dramatic CAT rescue: The story of Tater

'One rainy evening after work I chose a different route to go home. . . Coming down Jamestown Hill . . . and discovered in the road a small blob of what appeared to be a kitten. He was hunkered down in the lane as cars drove over him unnoticed. I immediately turned my car to block both lanes and come to his rescue,' Wendy Gousha writes. And that event changed Tater's fortunes forever

It warms my heart and puts a smile on my face to know that I chose to live in this wonderful community surrounded by loving and caring people.

Not only do the people of this county come together for individuals / families in need they also aide in the caring for our four legged friends.

During the night, the Events Calendar has been updated for September 2012

Recurrent meetings have been posted, for the most part. We invite all organizations to check the events list for any additions which may need to be made.

If your organization's events are not in ColumbiaMagazine.com Events, please send as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful response we've gotten to appeals to submit Events in our format. A special thanks to Mike Bennett of the Gradyville Baptist Church for helping us come up with extremely simple Copycat Editing system for faster posts.

Mr. Bennett simply copies the last post edited by CM and cuts and pastes for the next one. We can then do our job in less than one-quarter the time it takes us to rewrite, call or email for help, or, in a worse case scenario - have to lay the story aside.

The way the Gradyville Baptist Church does it, their submissions go to the top of the queue! - just in case anyone wonders how we post so much news from the re-emerging congregation.

Mary's House Progress Aug. 31, 2012: Footers are being poured

August 31, 2012 Being Accountable Report. To those who made it possible, to those who continue to give (yes, some additional funds are still needed) to a wonderful Adair County Way project: Mary's House
Click on headline for story with photo(s)

By Fran Neat
News from the Mary's House project

It had been planned as a bank house, now, keeping the construction on schedule, it's changed, by necessity - it seems for the better.

When Michael Meyer of Mercy Lane Construction and Danny Fudge of Fudge and Son Construction shot the grade with a transient, they discovered that there was not enough slope to the land for a bank house as was originally planned.

That didn't slow things down at all: Mary's house will now be constructed above ground using the exact same floor plan. And there was a bonus. Building above ground saved time and money on site preparation.

Then, thanks to beautiful, dry weather, David Abrell of Abrell's Poured Walls and his crew, James Willis, David Abrell, and Allen Absher dug and poured the footer for Mary's house Thursday of this week, August 30, 2012. Fran Neat
