Cats and vehicles

By Joyce Coomer
Commentary written on behalf of cats everywhere

I'm sure both Hope McTaco and the cat posted at LWC have ridden to town in someone's vehicle. Could you please post the following list of things to remember . . .

I am a cat lover, and it breaks my heart to see tiny, once-purring bodies strewn along the roadsides on my way to work. This heart-wrenching sight is more common on cool and/or damp or rainy mornings. If you are a cat owner and have outdoor cats, please keep the following things in mind:
  1. Remember that you have cats and that cats like to keep their feet dry and warm, and seek high spots to sit in.
  2. If you park your vehicle close to your house, please look around and under the vehicle to make sure there are no cats on it or near it before you get in your vehicle, and blow the horn BEFORE starting the motor so if cats are sitting on the frame or tires, they will get down. Cats don't like sudden loud noises, and I have found that if I use the remote alarm function on my key before I get to the vehicle, the cats will scatter even more quickly -- I assume they think the vehicle itself is after them since they can see both me and the vehicle.
  3. If you feed your cats in the morning, please feed them a good distance away from the vehicle, and feed them just before you are ready to leave, not as soon as you get up. If you feed your cats before you have breakfast and get dressed for work the cats will have time to eat their food and then look for a place to sit and wash their face and take a nap -- often choosing your vehicle because it is close to where they were fed.
  4. A heavy dew or fog will cause cats to get on the tires and frame of a vehicle the same as a shower of rain.
  5. If there are dogs at your house, or in the neighborhood, remember that, and check your vehicle for cats before getting and and starting the motor. Some cats don't like dogs, no matter how well the dog(s) like cats, and will get under and/or on a vehicle to get away from a dog.
  6. If you have a relatively secluded spot in your yard, you can make some sort of shelter for outdoor cats there -- a dog house with a door sized for cats is good. This gives the cats shelter from the weather and a sense of security somewhere besides a vehicle. You can also feed the cats near this shelter so they will associate it with food and stay around it. If you use a doghouse and it has a slanting rather than peaked roof, and is low enough for even a young cat to jump onto, they will be more apt to sit there and clean their face after eating than get in a vehicle.
  7. If you have kittens, these things are even more important to remember as kittens tend to hide more than grown cats will.

Comments re article 54151 Thank goodness for persistent and caring people in this world Sue Grant writes:
I think that Columbiamagazine.com and Ed Waggener deserve a gold medal for being so caring and helpful. Not long after I moved to Columbia, I found a stray dog that was so sweet, but I couldn't keep her. Ed was so good to work with and even made a couple of phone calls to me, which took his time. That little doggie has a wonderful home now. She is going to doggie kindergarten!!! Her family adores her. She hit the dog lottery. Thanks Ed and staff!! --Sue Grant

Comments re photo 46492 Newly formed CAT organization in rescue of Hope McTaco

By Sharon Whitehurst
Commentary

For many years our feline companions have been 'rescue' cats. Several of them came to live with us when friends, knowing we are cat lovers, called in desperation, knowing of a cat or kittens who needed a home.

My beloved Teasel literally appeared on the doorstep as a tiny kitten.

Thank goodness for persistent and caring people in this world

The Tara Pickens/Hope McTaco/C.A.T. story
Joyce M Coomer writes:
I am so glad the kitten got rescued . . . and wish I could have taken him/her home. I stopped at Taco Bell after work around 7pmCT yesterday to see if the kitten had been rescued and was so glad to hear that it had been. I didn't ask what color the kitten was, but dreamed this morning of someone giving me three black kittens -- two about the size of Hope McTaco, and one about half grown.

Thank goodness there are persistent and caring people in this world. I have picked up numerous cats that were abandoned and they all have been wonderful companions. Right now, I have only one cat that was born on our farm, the rest were tossed aside like garbage until I came along. --Joyce M Coomer

Operation Kitty Rescue is successful

Three week ordeal is over. Tara Pickens and others heard the tiny creature trapped in the storm sewer and tried to get "official help." She fed the kitten herself - then went public with the story, and the response was amazing. Through help of her fellow employees at McDonalds and cross Jamestown Street Taco Bell workers and leadership volunteered by Barbara Armitage, Maury Lewis, and Peg Schaeffer, and Antwuan Rouse who conquered his fear of spiders to set the live trap, a new Adair Icon - Hope McTaco - can look to a life of loving attention in the care of Tara Pickens. And C.A.T. - the "Citizen Action Team," is at the ready.
By Barbara Armitage

"Everyone could hear the kitty crying but nobody heard" Tara said about the ordeal. When it seemed like all hope was lost Tara refused to give up. Taking inspiration from her father who often quoted a Chinese proverb, "for all life is precious, nor can any be replaced" she knew that she had to keep trying.

For almost three weeks Tara asked for help to rescue the small kitten trapped in the sewer drain between McDonald's and Taco Bell in Columbia. She and others contacted city, county, state and even federal agencies numerous times to ask for assistance to no avail. Help finally came in the form of a letter to the editor of Columbia Magazine. Once the story was posted a rescue mission was immediately planned.
