Seeing beautiful quilt in dumpster made writer sad

Sue Buley writes:
It made me sad to see this beautiful quilt thrown away. Has it been rescued yet? I love quilts and do some quilting myself. I know the time that is invested in these quilts as well as the work and love. I was told at the quilt display at the state fair a few days ago that hand quilting was a lost art. I realized that must be true when I saw very few handmade quilts in the quilt display. Quilts are heirlooms and should be treated as such. I have several that I have made and plan to make many more that I hope my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren develop the love and appreciation for them that I have. - Sue Buley

Dan'l Boone statue

Martha Berry writes:

Isn't it a shame that the CJ could not have written about the unveiling of the Daniel Boone statue instead of the constant barrage of mayhem they seem to dote on. And the constant barrage of negative politics is really tiring. It would be nice to have some local color about what goes on in the rest of the State occasionally and stories like the Daniel Boone statue would be very welcome. Thanks to you for printing it for us "outlanders". --Martha Berry

Wants to know if Spectrum has been sent packing yet?

Personal commentary

Joe Hare writes:
My question regarding the interim CEO is have they been sent "packing" yet?

I know that Spectrum turned in a letter of resignation to be effective, I believe, September 14, but now we have a CEO with a proven track record . . . There were many layoff's this past Friday to try and save the hospital. please add the layoff of Spectrum and Mr Klein and save enough to pay our new CEO for several months.

There may be reasons why this could not happen, but, we, the general public who are not privy to all, see it as it presented to us.

Fall Colors: Why are they here this year so early?

Charles Marshburn writes:
Are the trees changing their colors because of drought or because 'tis the season? --Charles Marshburn
Shouldja ask me I'd lay it on the earlier and earlier start of school, but I'm just channeling what I think Dr. Neat or Pete Walker would have said, using common sense. Maybe we should ask Billy Joe Fudge, who will give us the modern science on the matter, or take the word of some other person of uncommon sense. - EW

One Man's Love for His Family and Ancestral Community

Submitted by Carol Cox
Click on headline for story with photo(s)

A member of the Grider family whose history is rich in the New Concord community of Adair County has recently presented a monument in the Concord Cemetery at New Concord.

The monument is to honor members of his Lepiarczyk family. Mr. Erwin Heinrich Lepiarczyk II, a resident of Churchill Place, is very proud of his New Concord heritage. His mother was born and grew up in the Concord community, near Garlin; before it became known as New Concord. Mr. Lepiarczyk's grandfather and great-grandmother, Daniel Marion Grider (1888-1949) and Mary Margaret Bryant Grider (1846-1936), were the first members of his branch of the Grider family to live at Concord.

Gradyville Baptist Church

Click on headline for item with photo(s)

By Kenny Browning, the Feedman

Located close to Hwy 80 in Gradyville, Kentucky. Noticed when geo-tagging it that the road to it is off of Walker Store Road. Have a feeling that the Walker Store is long gone. I have noticed the church from Hwy 80 and from the Cumberland Parkway and always thought that it was in a scenic location.

Took the time today to take a few photos of it and a few other spots in the Gradyville area. In the early 1900,s it was a booming town with a population of 300 or more and had several businesses.

A flash flood in June of 1907 changed the town forever, leaving twenty-one dead, the village devastated, and several thousand acres of growing crops ruined. - Kenny Browning, The Feedman

On Boone's Trail: Unveiling of new Daniel Boone statue

"This is important. In a time when many towns are abandoning their history and heritage, it is refreshing to see a town actually embracing it . . . Though I will probably not visit Barbourville, Kentucky on a regular basis, when I am in town I can point to that grand statue and say, "I was a part of that!", even though my part may have been small. It was a fun day of History for the Adair County Militia! . . . Thanks to Gary Pike for getting me included and thanks to the nice folks of Barbourville for treating us "Flatlanders" with such appreciative respect." - KEN HILL

By Ken Hill

Once in a great while one gets the opportunity to be part of something they can tell their grandkids about. Such was the case on Friday, August 24, 2012 when I was invited to attend the unveiling of the new Daniel Boone Statue in Barbourville, KY.

I have been involved in 18th Century reenacting for about two years, and I owe much of my success to Richard Phelps for igniting my spark of interest, and to Gary Pike for helping me to build that spark into a flame. Along my "Pilgrim's Journey", I have learned and re-learned much about the history of Kentucky and the movement of folks from the Colonies into this region.

Spectrum got the CEO $25,000/month money

The three CEOs which Spectrum rotated through Columbia in the past 18 months did not receive the full $25,000 per month; that was just the gross charge from Spectrum to Westlake for supplying service of one (1) CEO. - EW
Response to Mike Newton's letter: Comments re article 54043 For 25000 a month Klein should have been walking on water

Cheryl Wall writes (to Mike Newton):
Mr. Newton -

I would like to clarify that neither Mr. Klein, Mr. Menton nor Mr. Brown made $25K per month as CEO while at Westlake. All three interim CEO's were hired by Spectrum. Spectrum received the $25K per month, not any of these three gentleman, however they were paid by Spectrum but not the $25K. I enjoyed working with all three Interim CEO's and I assure you they cared about all of the employees at WRH and became somewhat attached to the employees.

I look forward to working with Mr. Rasmussen and the future of Westlake Regional Hospital.
--Cheryl Wall

Thanks, Cheryl Wall for making the distinction. My story relied only on the information asked for and freely given by Mr. Richard Grant and Mr. Craig Pyles, Thanks to them for bringing a New Day of Openness and Transparency.
