Barbara Armitage: Turns out, dogs and cats great with languages

Studies in Anthropomorphism: A subspecialty of Varmintology. Proven case histories of animals fluent in Italian and English, English and Korean, Russian and Kentuckian, and divers other astounding information

By Barbara J. Armitage

Oh Ed, dogs and cats are really good with languages. Unlike some people they don't think that they have to be in college to learn something new.

I grew up with Lupa, a German Shepherd born and educated in Italy. She was fluent in both Italian and English. Lupa was possibly the most intelligent dog I ever met. Lupa by the way is Latin for "She Wolf" a name that truly described her.

Learned more about other cultures in geography class

ACHS once had French, German, and Latin

Joyce M. Coomer writes:
When I took Spanish class in high school, there was very little, if anything, mentioned about the culture of Spain or Mexico or any other Spanish-speaking culture - we learned just the language. I learned more in Mr. McLain's (I think I spelled his name correctly; he was my teacher my freshman year in high school.) geography class about foreign cultures than I ever did in Spanish class . . . The high school at that time also had French, German and Latin classes available. - Joyce M Coomer

Could the Jelly Bean the Shop Cat fervor start a movement here?

Activist seems ready to lead Shop Cat Movement which might put Adair County ahead of such famed places as Hillsboro Village or even mighty Shelbyville, KY (though we'll maintain neutrality on rivalry with the latter until we contact our Shelby Countians: The Girls and the Grevans - Tillie & Hailey, Graham, Evan

Lois Cunningham writes:
I, too, love shop cats. They are in shops across the country. Originally, they were kept in stores years and years ago to keep the mouse population down. Hillsboro Village in Nashville has many shops with cats - the flower shop, jewelry shop, ladies boutique, high end furniture store, and even the Belcourt Theater all have shop cats and all within a two block area. To me a shop with a cat or cats feels friendlier. How about it, Adair county shops: adopt a rescue cat and start a tradition here too... --Lois Cunningham

An FFA mom defends the program, supporters actions

No implication suggested that hospital situation is not overriding issue facing Adair County today

By Crystal Hayes
Personal commentary

I don't think anyone tried to down play the issue of the hospital obviously that is of much more importance.

Everyone in this community will be adversely affected if the hospital closes. No one wants to be without a hospital. The staff delivering patient care and the staff who maintains the facility does an excellent job and no one wants to see these people loose their jobs.

Forever grateful to Westlake ER for saving son's life

Ronnie D. Holt writes:
We the people of Adair County can blame whoever we want to on the situation at our hospital.

We cannot correct the past.

What we need to know is: Fix the problems. Save our hospital.

Eight years ago, my oldest son was in a very bad car wreck as a passenger in a car. Westlake Hospital E.R. staff saved my son's life.

If Westlake had not been there, my son would have bled to death from his injuries. They stablized him and transfered him to UofL Trauma Center in Louisville.

I am forever grateful.

Two credits of pre-college foreign language suggested by UK

Rebecca Grant writes:
Perhaps some of these people should take a look at the pre-college curriculum wanted by those who would like to attend UK, one being Foreign Language-2 credits. Two credits in the same foreign language or demonstrated competency.

This was copied from a UK information folder received by my grandson. Ag and ag related classes are very important for our rural students who may choose not to attend college but do we have to shove one or the other down everyone''s throats. Can the school system "comprise"? At least for the sake of our students.

We support AG in the school system. Farmers have been the reason my husband was able to have the career of his choice; however, not everyone can or chooses to be a farmer. - Rebecca Grant

Nothing like a cat to add special presence

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
I've always been partial to businesses that have a 'shop cat.' I've known several book store cats, a cat who graced the front window of a tiny mom and pop grocery in Vermont and even a marmalade cat with Scottish Fold ears who was the official greeter at an auto repair shop in Wyoming. Nothing like a cat to add a special presence. - Sharon Whitehurst
