Site Based Council votes 4-2 to move ag to academic

After two efforts at consensus failed, the Adair County High School Site Based Council voted 4-2, with the Principal Troy Young, and Teachers Mike Godsey, Marsha Riddick, and Kevin Robertson voting to move the position to an academic area, and the two parent representatives, Melinda Franklin and Sandy Pyles, voting no.

Mr. Young will send the recommendation to the board of education, along with a recommendation that the board create an instructional aid to help the remaining two agriculture teachers.

Principal Young said that Superintendent Alan W. Reed had told him that he would ask the board to create the instructional position, but that final approval would be up to the board.

Uses WRH for everything she can have done there

' My husband's life, in my opinion, was saved a few times by the quick, accurate work of the hospital nurses and doctors. - Brenda McCoy Harvey

Brenda McCoy Harvey writes:
By all means, please keep the hospital open. I was on the hospital board for 8 years. We had some hard years and we were there late many nights. We always managed to work it out and have the money to run on. It takes a lot of effort from everyone involved. Bickering and fighting between management, employees, board, etc., will not get the hospital back in operation. Everyone will have to work together.

I use our hospital for everything I can have done there. When I had a heart attack I was taken to our ER, stabilized, treated with knowledge and speed and was on a helicopter to Louisville within an hour. I would not want to ever think this hospital would be closed! My husband's life, in my opinion, was saved a few times by the quick, accurate work of the hospital nurses and doctors. Let's all support our local hospital! --Brenda McCoy Harvey

Letter: Hiring Authority, and SBDM Guidelines

Comments re: Troy Kimbler inquires about school hiring procedures

Amy Waggener writes:
If Adair County is like most, the Superintendent is the only individual with hiring authority. The principal acts as a designee of the superintendent. Most SBDM by-laws state that the council consults on these hires. That usually means the principal says here is who and why, but SBDM members can be included in interviews. However, this seems to be more about allocation of staff positions.

I don't want to speak for the members, since I was not in attendance, but I would guess the SBDM members feel that another foreign language teacher will better help meet student achievement goals, on which all schools are measured. All SBDM decisions must be based on increasing student achievement, which, at the high school level, focuses on College and Career Readiness. If these goals are not met, the state offers assistance. If a school/district persistently underperforms, the state can basically take over.- Amy Waggener

Tracey Pierce: 100% in Support of Principal Young decision

She's thankful, that, after the vote is taken tonight, whatever the outcome, we'll still have an Ag Department, unlike the situation with many other school programs

By Tracey Pierce

As an employee and alumnus of Adair County High School, a parent of two high school students, and a "farmer's daughter", I would like to express my opinion after attending Monday night's Site Base Council Meeting. I want to begin by stating that I fully support the agricultural program in the high school. It is a very important program. Without agriculture there would be no life. I grew up on a farm and appreciate all of the hard labor and finances that it takes to run one properly. I have participated in everything from milking cows, to setting and cutting tobacco, to picking pepper, to cutting cabbage, to filing taxes.

Richard Raines: Judge Ann Melton showed wisdom

Richard Raines writes:
I would like to say it takes a wise person to know we need to seek God's guidance on matters, whether it be something major or in our day to day life.

Ann Melton has gained new respect in my eyes for asking the community to pray for decisions that had to be made.

Also, thanks to all those who either made sacrifices (Westlake employees) or stuck their necks out (the fiscal court and hospital board) for the decisions that were made.

Thanks to both banks that said they would loan money to help keep Westlake operating, when others were talking forclosure. You've shown your interest in the community.

Finally I want to say that we the taxpayers/citizens of Adair County need to remember that Westlake hospital and its affiliated operations (clinics) belong to US, not to some individual or board of directors or administrators unless a sale is transacted with all the papers signed and the agreed upon money delivered.

This applies to all of us whether we are patients of the hospital or use Westlake clinics or not. --Richard Raines

(Ad) Time for yard sale postings - and a note for better publicity

A number of neighborhood, community wide, and highway Yard Sales come to us throughout the year. It makes it easier for us if each Yard Sale is sent directly to us, one Yard sale per entry.

If the yard sale is part of a neighborhood, community wide or highway sale, just note that, succinctly, in the ad: "A Willard County wide sale," "John Adair City sale" or "JIM Highway sale," for instance

It will give more publicity to both the individual yard sale and the community yard sale, and will save a great deal of work on our end. -ED WAGGENER

Comment - Support Tax; put community first

The Adair County way: We are a community which helps each other, writer says. Fiscal court took the first giant step last night - a game changer. In comparison to what the employees are giving up to save the hospital, the tax is insignificant
Related from late last night: Court, Hospital Board, Banks give new hope for Westlake

By Nicole Bell

Before you decide to sign the petition to stop the hospital tax, please think about our community as a whole rather than how it affects only yourself. In order to save our hospital, many sacrifices will have to be made. The Fiscal Court has taken the first step by loaning us money to stay afloat, but it is only the beginning. We need this tax to be implemented to help keep funds coming into the facility, and to keep us on track to get out of the red and into the black.

Chris Cato writes $1.5 million not enough save WRH

Comments re article 53928 Court Hospital Board Banks give new hope for Westlake

Chris Cato writes:
Ed, I have known you ever since I was a young lad. I said I would never get involved in this hospital fiasco, but this is just too much. I have known Craig and know he too is smarter than this. We have to sell the hospital to Kosair or Norton's, one of which was at one time highly interested in the purchase. 1.5 million they can't possibly be serious. That's just another loan to keep it afloat for 4 more months. We as a county need to look at another serious buyer. That is if we want to have a hospital at all. - Chris Cato
