We are putting embattled hospital back on solid fiscal ground Comments on related from late last night: Court, Hospital Board, Banks give new hope for Westlake By Billy Joe Fudge Hear, hear! Congratulations to the people of Adair County. We, through our fiscal court, have now officially begun the process to put our embattled hospital back on solid, fiscal ground. I say officially because the people of Adair County unofficially began the process some time ago when we all became concerned enough to engage in a public discussion about the situation. Each citizen staked out his or her position and then we all collectively as a community worked our way through the democratic process to the point at which we find ourselves at this time. Jim Caywood: Westlake rose to No 1 in my eyes - today After what he thinks is a allergic reaction to Niacin, he was treated at Westlake. He has accolades for the hospital - especially the ER and gives Celia Downey a gold star. 'She's the best,' he says. By Jim Caywood Somewhere in my ramblings I read that Niacin would help clean your arteries. It might do it...but be very careful if you take it. I picked up a bottle at a health food store. I'm 99% sure it's what put me in the hospital for a couple hours today with an alergic reaction after reading a link sent to me by my son Clint. I had forgotten I had taken it as I was more or less in a fog. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2012-08-21 21:26:22 | Comments | Printable version

Says its time to accept the tax, support the hospital, and show appreciation to the doctors and staff for the job they do.'We are Adair Countians and we can pull through this, but it will take us all.' Joe Hare adds. Comments on related story from late last night: Court, Hospital Board, Banks give new hope for Westlake By Joe Hare Personal Commentary If you were not at the Fiscal Court Call meeting today you missed a chance to see how the people of Adair County can pull together. Kudos to the Westlake board for getting to the "bottom line" of this problem we all have and for coming up with a feasible plan to come out of the hole we are in. As stated last week by Mr. Pyles it is not pleasant or nice, but is going to have to be done. Thanks to Judge Melton and Fiscal Court for the work and decisions made to help us keep our hospital. Court, Hospital Board, Banks give new hope for Westlake Story in progress
More will be added later By Ed Waggener The Adair County Fiscal Court made perhaps the most courageous move in the history of Adair County tonight when it approved borrowing $1.5 million dollars to infuse into Westlake Regional Hospital at a time when a consortium of banks were threatening to begin talks on foreclosure proceedings as early as Wednesday, August 22, 2012. The courts action followed an earlier meeting of the Adair County Hospital District at which time drastic cost cutting measures were approved as recommended by new board member and Vice Chair Craig Pyles and new member Richard Grant by 3-0 votes, with Member Bruce White voting with them; along with the cost cutting moves, the board voted to ask for the loan from Adair Fiscal Court. Support your local hospital Peggy Fudge writes: I'd like to remind everyone to please support our hospital. As of this morning, it was still open and fully functional. I had to have a procedure done in x-ray and I could have gone anywhere in the area, but my doctor and I were in agreement that I should have it at Westlake. The place is clean, the lights are on, and everyone is as caring and professional as they have always been. Westlake has long had a reputation for providing an exceptional environment of caring. This has not changed and even if the facility must close, I have no doubt that the standard of care will remain high to the last. Please be supportive any way you can. And keep the employees and the facility in your prayers. --Peggy Fudge 2012-08-21 15:03:01 | Comments | Printable version

Raising Julia Ann Pickett was a full-time, full-town chore Reposted today in honor of Martha Berry It really did take the whole downtown to raise this Columbian, whose mischief kept her in the spot light and hot water from the time she was the star of the wedding at the Presbyterian church, to getting stuck crossing Burkesville Street in a culvert, to the beautiful, but unappreciated haircut she gave Benny Burr, to the disastrous first trip to buy bread at Kroger's: She was the kid everybody loved, who got in one scrape after another. Whose mother readily admits her brother is the better kid (anybody would have been she says with a laugh). The grandmother of today, with unbelievable humor when she tells her own story, has a powerful love for Columbia. "The people don't come any better and the love any stronger than we all had, and have, for one another. That's what made our childhood so special here," she says now. The story will have revisions. We hope you'll check back at times. And it won't be complete until Julia Ann Pickett takes over and completes a book, which would be, for certain, an American classic. By Ed Waggener Nothing in ColumbiaMagazine.com has ever seemed to connect with so many people as Billy Conn's picture of the "Birthday Party, ca 1952" which was posted August 14, 2007." It didn't take long for the identification asked for to come in, with very few errors from anyone. Now we know that the event was to celebrate the sixth birthday of Julia Ann Pickett (Thompson), on May 29, 1951. She remembers it like it was yesterday, and has identified almost everyone in the picture." "Birthdays were different, then," she said. "You didn't have a party every year. You chose a year and that was your birthday party year. I chose my sixth birthday," she recalls, and that is how so many of the town's most popular kids came to be there." I used the things I learned in AG more than any other class during my career as a machinist for 35 years. I continue to use the life skills I learned from J.T. Coomer and Norman Grant every day in my ministry. The way you can use the democratic way to help your cause is for no one to sign up for Spanish, thus eliminating the need for a Spanish teacher. Troy Kimbler inquires about school hiring procedures Comments re photo 46344 For a Site Based Council meeting turnout was huge Troy Kimbler writes: Wondering whose jobs it is to hire teachers the site base council or the principal at the high school? - Troy KimblerTroy Kimbler - It's a good question. We're all learning. From what I know, The superintendent and the school board don't directly hire the way they used to, back when politics were simpler, when you elected a trustee (now a board member), and he or rarely she was supposed to get your daughter a school. The new way is, they tell us 'more better.' Hope someone can explain it with Great Wooded South simplicity, not government-speak. -EW 2012-08-21 05:53:30 | Comments | Printable version

Comment: Totally agrees with Ann on need for prayers for WRH 'There is not a one of us in Adair County who can truthfully say we don't need a hospital here, because you never know when we might need treatment there for one reason or another. We need the hospital here for when minutes (no seconds) in getting to treatment could mean the difference between life and death. By Richard Raines Personal commentary I totally agree with Ann (Judge Melton's) request for prayer about the situation of our hospital. We have seen numerous problems come up in our county over the years that couldn't be solved without God's intervention, but with His help, the problems were worked through. I know there are quite a few people in Adair County who know how to get hold of God though prayer. Has the real importance of the Hospital sunk in? Closure would mean much more than just the hospital - but a whole lot more, Barbara Hancock writes, urging support for the hospital and the other facilities Barbara Hancock Personal commentary I'm sure that I am one of many that has voiced an opinion about the current state of affairs. I have noticed that in many of the posts that most refer to the possiblility of the closure of this facility. Victoria Pike's behind-the-scenes clarifications on SBDM story Victoria Pike arrived early for the big event of August 20, 2012, allegedly because of a rare wrong time in the CM Events page. But the early arrival was a fortuitous act of Providence - almost meant to be. She was there for the tractor and Farm Equipment Parade, she was shown the matchless hospitality of the Ag Department with a VIP tour of the ag facilities, hosted by John Marshall Shelley and Kirby Hancock, and still worked in a call to CM to triumphantly announce that we had the time wrong - and had better fix it quick. We did and apologize. She was so impressed with the ag department she was longing for a second chance to learn from the experts, even though, she said, she appreciated the ag she's learned from her neighbors at Bliss. -EW By Victoria Pike News from the Committee To finish your report, here are the ones who spoke that I wrote down for media types needing special assistance - you, for instance: Kirby Hancock, David Herbst, Elmer George, Todd Spaulding, Tommy Grider, Greg Corbin, Billy Rowe, Tim Baker, Debra Wimmer, Danny Wilkinson, Recc employee, and a black-haired lady that I didn't get her name.
