Mahaylie Abbott lives her grandfather's dream tonight

2012-08-18 - Trinity Fellowship Hall - Photo by Ed Waggener. The late Johnie Grant and granddaughter Mahaylie Abbott used to conspire to buy a Sno-Cone machine and sell the ice treats at get togethers. Tonight, Mahaylie is doing it, at a benefit for Johnie's widow, Pam Grant, at the Davenport Fellowship Hall by Trinity United Methodist Church. She's doing a great business, too. The benefit and the Ham, Bean, Slaw and Cornbread supper (5) prepared by Paula Miller and Ken Hill, is still being served at this time, and the auction has yet to start as this is posted at 6:18pmCT.

Thanks to Columbia Sav A-Lot: Mom's wallet is home!!!

The wallet had been left in a cart at Mrs. Marcum's favorite Columbia store, our neighborhood Sav A Lot

By Linda Waggener

After overhauling every single piece of stuff in every spot in the house that could have had any of mom's stuff and after asking at every restaurant we'd visited, I gave up and put an appeal on ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Lost: Woman's Wallet, black patent leather, zippered, about the size of a large open hand. Last seen about 10 days ago in Columbia. Believe it may have been left in GoodWill or at one of the restaurants. If found please call 270-403-0017."
Five hours and 50 minutes later a woman named Devonna called to say it sounded like a wallet someone had left where she works. She gave me the store name - Sav A Lot - and the number, 384-6689, and Paul's name to ask and describe.

A call to Paul, identifying the name on the checks in the wallet, did the trick. He said they'd found it over a week ago laying in a grocery cart and tried to look up the name on the checks in the phone book and found no one by that name in the Columbia area phone book.

We owe Devonna and Paul and the staff at Sav A Lot a heartfelt thank-you for their honesty and good customer service. They had kept it in the safe until identification could be made.

An Answer on SBDM's comes quickly

Comment related to Where can names of members of the SBDM Councils be found?

Patty Jones writes:
A great resource for more information about School-Based Decision-Making Councils (Site-Based) is www.kasc.net. This is the website for the Kentucky Association of School Councils which is the go to organization for all things related to school council policies and procedures. - Patty Jones
Thanks. The website does have a lot of information. I didn't see a place on it to find the names of the members of the site-based councils for Adair County, but maybe it's hidden deeper. If any member or principal could help us with a list to post, we'd greatly appreciate it. -EW

Where can names of members of the SBDM Councils be found?

And other Questions
I haven't found it easy to learn the basics about the Site Based Decision Making Councils. If a member of the Fifth Estate is as ignorant on the question as I am, what about the rest of our readers? Do the names of the SBDM Council members just come tripping off your tongues? Are you holding out on me and keeping me in the dark? I think that before I'd be qualified to write much of anything on the subject of whether to continue with a third Agriculture teacher, I'd need more information, even beyond what the many letters written have suggested. Maybe I'm alone, but I have more questions than answers. - EW:

By Ed Waggener

Here are just a few questions:
  1. Who, besides the the Adair County High School Site Based Council, has any say in the matter? Superintendent Reed? School board members Floyd Burton, Marsha Walker, Mike Harris, Joe Payne, or Rebecca Turner? Public opinion? State Officials? Area Development Districts? The Federal Government?
  2. Who are the members of the Adair County High School Site Based Council? (and for that matter, where can the names of the members of other Site Based Councils be found?)
  3. What event in the past triggered the need, or the opportunity, to have a third Agriculture Teacher? And if those conditions continue, what's the issue?
  4. Were those funds local, or did they come through some well meaning state or Federal grant?
  5. Just how long has Adair County had three Agriculture teachers? How long have we had two?
And if there are no consequences for other programs and if Adair County has always had three ag teachers and we've always had local funds to pay for three, what's the big deal?

If it doesn't affect other academic programs, if there is no overlap with redundant programs, and Adair County can achieve all its goals and continue to have three ag teachers, why argue over it?

Ken and Lynda Wilkerson support three Ag teaching positions

By Ken and Lynda Wilkerson

As life long Adair County residents who live on a farm in the New Concord Community and operate a local business, we are voicing our support to keep the current three teaching positions in the Adair County School System agricultural Program. Wendell Berry said it rather well when he stated,
"Good farmers who take seriously their duties as stewards of Creation and of their land's inheritors, contribute to the welfare of society in more ways than society usually acknowledges, or even knows. These farmers produce valuable goods of course, but they also conserve soil, they conserve water, they conserve wildlife, they conserve open spaces, they conserve scenery."
We agree with Mr. Berry, AG teaches our youth to be good stewards of the Earth. What more could we ask of any class?

Respectfully, - Ken and Lynda Wilkerson
