If there's a post office in heaven, Vicki Pierce is there Gradyville has truly lost a treasure Comments re article 49209 Vicki Kay Pierce Adair Co KY 19522012 By Betsy Fausnaugh My heart goes out to the family of Vicki Pierce. If there is a Post office in heaven I'm sure Vicki's smiling face is there to greet folks. She was one of the first people that I had the delight to meet here in Gradyville. Excellent customer service was always a way of life for her, whether you were in need of a box, bubble wrap or stamps, Vicki went out of her way to help you. I had the privilege to work under her as a post-master relief in the tiny Gradyville Post office. She was a great friend to all but especially the elderly in the area. It was not unheard of for her to drop off stamps or packages to someone who was homebound. Many times I watched her patiently help the older folks write out and mail their bills. They trusted her and she loved them. Gradyville has definitely lost a treasure. May you rest in peace my friend. --Betsy Fausnaugh 2012-01-04 11:26:53 | Comments | Printable version

The Coyote and the Turkeys: Real life animal drama Columbia, KY A rafter of turkeys can almost always be seen on the Petty's Creek side of the big field by Majestic Yachts. (Bordering if not in town). It's always a fascinating sight, when there is no apparent danger. But Jennifer Crawhorn was treated to animal theatre rarely seen: The turkeys in seeming peril from a much hated predator, their counter defense, and the carnivore's retreat after a futile hunt. She came away with renewed respect for both creatures. Click on headline for full story, photo(s) By Jennifer Crawhorn When my son first spotted this real life drama in the field past Majestic Yachts on the Veterans ByPass, a coyote was very close to a group of turkeys. What perplexed me the most was the fact the turkeys seemed either completely oblivious to its presence or unconcerned. As I watched, the turkeys seemed to move to safety without a giving away a hint of concern. They put a secure distance between the flock and the predator. Eventually, the coyote seemed to just give up, though I never found out if our new friend, the coyote, was tryng to make some new friends him/herself, or have breakfast. But it finally gave up and headed into the woods. I'm betting on the latter, though! Either way, the coyote never bothered the turkeys and slowly made its way back into the woods by Petty's Fork Creek. The fun part of the experience was making contact with our new friend, the Coyote. Maybe he deserves his reputation as a pest, but I still couldn't help appreciating the animal's beauty. And, after all, he was only trying to do what the rest of us do: Make a living the only way we know how. -JENNIFER CRAWHORN 2012-01-04 07:01:17 | Comments | Printable version
JIM - Gradyville, KY 1902, a town with all essentials A grand hotel, a college, doctors, plenty of preachers and a tooth dentist, were among the assets of this great Adair County community. All they needed was for the Adair Fiscal Court to get through bridging and built a decent road to Columbia By JIM Gradyville: A town on the move, 1902 In April, 1902, Gradyville correspondent W.M. Wilmore gave this thumbnail word sketch of the community he long called home: Our town is gradually improving. We have four stores; two churches, prayer meeting once a week, Sunday School; roller mill, two saw mills; tombstone, cabinet, and millinery shops; carding machine; silver smith and gun shop; shingle machine; college, and one of the best schools in the county; Masonic Hall; two carpenters; two practicing physicians, one tooth dentist; three preachers; and God only knows how many loafers. We trust our Fiscal Court will tax our payers a reasonable per cent to assist in making a road from here to the county seat so we can get to town in winter without much trouble. We dry land people will probably present this question to the court when they are done bridging.Mr. Wilmore apparently was too modest to mention one of his own businesses, the Wilmore Hotel, "no better place to stop...good sample rooms, and a first-rate table. Rates very reasonable. Feed stable attached." The "college" referred to the private high school then in operation at Gradyville, while "the best school" referred to the common (free) school that went through the eighth grade. An ad in the December 25, 1901 News stated that "The Gradyville High School will open first Monday in January. Primary course $1.50, Intermediate course $2.00, Teachers course $2.50. Good board can be obtained for $1.50 for full week, from Monday until Friday, $1.00. Address -- John W. Flowers, Principal, Bliss, Ky." The final line in Mr. Wilmore's entry refers to the steel bridges that had been approved by and paid for through the Adair County Fiscal Court in recent years. JIM: CM report of motor trip to Eli, KY, evokes memories of Ono The letter below was an attempt to enlighten the editor of CM, following his recent visit to Eli, after which he admitted, privately, an appalling ignorance of the geography of a Sacred Triangle anchor city, Ono. The outrageosity of the statements contained herein are solely the responsibility of the writer. - CM By JIM Many a time has the sun set and the moon risen I breathed a lungful of that righteous Eli air. (Even tho' that esteemed place is Outside the Sacred Triangle, I'll be the first to say that there's always been a sense of Rightness around Eli, except in a perfidious place or two where the Unwashed make corn squeezin', and even those places are pretty damned good compared to the hell's delight eclypt Jamestown.
