PoliticsLink: McGaha won't seek re-election

Candidate will be weighing possible re-districting

Senator Vernie McGaha's announcement that he won't seek re-election, first reported to CM by phone from Larry Smith of the WAVE 92.7FM, to represent Kentucky Senate District 15 - Adair, Casey, Pulaski and Russell Counties - (See story: RealClear politics:McGaha won't seek re-election to state Senate sets up speculation about a possible successor.

At the moment, the most frequently mentioned possible successor , Hilda Legg, a Knifley, Adair KY native and Somerset resident, is saying that she hasn't yet made up her mind whether to seek the post.

"Of course," she said, "if Vernie were to have sought re-election I wouldn't even consider it," she said in a telephone interview. She did say that a number of people have encouraged her to run should Senator McGaha decide not to, but a number of factors could affect that decision.

New district lines could affect candidacies. If the district were to stay the same as Senator McGaha's, with Adair, Casey, Pulaski, and Russell Counties, it would be ideal for Legg.

Senator McGaha would have likely been able to keep the district intact. But there is a strong likelihood that a shift in district lines could come, and that will shift the dyanamics of the race.

There's an interesting analysis of the meaning of the retirement on cn/2: Analysis: How McGaha's retirement could affect Sen. David Williams' district by Ryan Alessi which considers how the McGaha retirement and likely subsequent redistricting, could affect Senator David Williams' future. As well, it could change the outlook for a Senate run by Hilda Legg.

Under a scenario presented in the Ryan Alessi, if the redistricting puts the most populous county, Pulaski, as well as Russell County, with Clinton, Cumberland and Wayne Counties, the dynamics shift a bit for a possible Legg candidacy, with the loss of Adair County, where she is extremely popular.
