Thank You for Chuck Hinman's writings Alsie Mae Stapleton writes: I want to thank you for printing Chuck Hinman's stories for your readers to enjoy. Chuck was more like a brother to me, rather than just a friend. We shared the piano and organ playing at New Harmony Baptist church. No way did I have the talent that he had, nobody does, but he encouraged me along. I appreciate that you allowed others to enjoy his wonderful memories, that he wrote about so eloquently. I have kept all his stories, and enjoy loaning them to friends that did not know Chuck, except through his stories, that were finally printed in our local newspaper. People who have never met him are remembering him and missing him, through his story writing.I want to Thank You again, for sharing his stories. He was so thrilled to have others, besides just us locals, able to read his stories.Thank you, Alsie Mae Stapleton, for adding to our insight of this wonderful man. Chuck Hinman was a true favorite of CM readers. So many of us deeply mourn his passing. He was a great writer. -ED WAGGENER 2011-12-18 13:33:05 | Comments | Printable version

Carlis B. Wilson: First Christmas Remembered (from 1939) The holidays were much simpler celebrated in 1939in a four-room house on a dirt road in rural Adair County, when Christmas was a holiday fruit and candy, and one small toy - in his case, a single loader cap pistol with 50 caps, the last he remembers ever having for the gun By Carlis B. JIM The 2nd meeting at Gettysburg True Courage and nobleness of heart By JIM The Battle of Gettysburg, waged in the opening days of July 1863, had become an horrific bloodbath by the time the last rifle fired and the last cannon roared. Estimates vary so much it's impossible to state numbers with any certainty, but by most accounts the two armies suffered combined casualties (killed, wounded, captured, or missing) of around 50,000, including approximately 8,000 battlefield dead. Chuck Hinman: IJMA : 188 : My Legacy Chuck Hinman died December 15, 2011, and, as he describes below, has gone to his heavenly townhouse (Chuck Hinman, Bartlesville, OK, (1922-2011)). He spent a long life preparing for it, as it describes below in It's Just Me Again No. 188, "My Legacy," written two years ago. Chuck Hinman was introduced to readers of ColumbiaMagazine.com by members of the Hart County Literary Group, an friendship of essayists and artists focused around The Bookstore in Horse Cave, KY. Few other writers on CM have ever had the impact of Chuck Hinman. He seemed so much one of our own, with experiences he shared so parallel to those of Kentuckians in the South Central part of the state. Hardly a week has gone by since his columns were first posted that Robert Stone did not send another column, and when he didn't or we failed to post, we heard from readers! His passing will be mourned by many here - so many who knew him as an intimate friend, even though they had never met except through his writing. By Chuck Hinman As I live out my life waiting for my heavenly townhouse to be completed, I occasionally reflect on what one thing I will most be remembered for when I'm out of here. Certainly I have lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma long enough to have left some tracks. The question is -- what tracks will I most be remembered for?
