Hands Extended Thanksgiving 2011: Report and Album 2011's Community Thanksgiving exceeded all expectations. It was a perfect day, with as good a Thanksgiving meal of Turkey, Ham, Dressing, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Green Beans, and all the fixings. Attendance was high, and even the setting, the cafeteria in the Adair County Middle School with its rich heritage and history - it was the cafeteria so many Adair Countians remember in the first Adair County High School Building - was perfect. Those in attendance and participating went across the spectrum of social levels, wealth or lack of it, and means of earning a living or no means. It was a textbook example of The Adair County Way at work. -EW Click on headline for story plus big photo album ColumbiaMagazine.com story The Hands Extended Community Thanksgiving, a huge success at its inception in 2010 grew by an amazing 32% in 2011. The Race of Milltown Bridge By: Jim From: The Adair County News, Wednesday, July 4, 1900 In the year 1849 or '50, when a wooden bridge was completed over the creek at Milltown, this county, Mr. John W. Townsend, of Milltown, and Mr. Tobias Leftwich, of Green county, were the first to cross said bridge and after they had crossed the structure they ran a foot race, resulting as we are informed, in a draw for the honor. That bridge served its purpose and has long since crumbled and been borne to other parts by the rapid current that flowed beneath it. Now a new iron and steel structure is to be erected at the same place and in commemoration of its completion, Mr. Leftwich has challenged Mr. Townsend to again cross the bridge and run a foot race. Mr. Townsend has accepted the challenge and the race is a certainty, barring sickness and death. JIM Off the Cuff: A Christmas Tale from Old Columbia There's proof that The Adair County Way has worked for at least a century in the response to a fire at Elder Z.T. and Mary Williams' residence on Burkesville Street; and, as usual in JIM segues, the good humor of the Sandusky family shows through in a little boy's response to the report of a fire: He had his Christmas priorities in Order - CM By Jim The cacophonous clang of the fire alarm bell rent asunder Columbia's sleepy silence just about dark one December evening a century ago and galvanized the citizenry to action. Almost immediately, the location of the blaze became known to most everyone in town: the home of Rev. Z.T. & Mary Williams, two of Columbia's most-loved inhabitants, a little ways out Burkesville Street. As always, the townspeople quickly responded to need, and "In a few minutes, several hundred persons were en route to the building."
