Mike Watson places era of old Courthouse photo in mid-1930s Doors of courthouse were frequently taken down in warm weather to allow air circulation; notes Greensburg Street entrance was shorter. But he has not found a date on the addition of the additional office and storage space nor when it was taken away Comments on Favorite Old Photo: Early Adair County Courthouse By MIke Watson This is a wonderful photograph of the Courthouse and a large portion of the Public Square. It is difficult to date the photo, but most likely in the mid-1930s. As for there being no doors, there was a time when the doors were taken down in warm weather to better allow air to circulate through the offices. I do not know, however, about the fan windows over the doors, they may have been removed at the same time to avoid damage. Kentucky Color - Adair County's Largest Sinkhole Swallet Click on headline for article with photo(s) By Billy Joe Fudge, Vice President Homeplace on Green River, Inc. Retired District Forester, Kentucky division of Forestry All of the surface water and spring water inside the over 6 square mile sinkhole plain runs into and along Sinking Branch to its ultimate destination, the swallet. Of course, the swallet is the lowest point of a sinkhole and it is where the sinkhole funnels water underground. As we have discussed in the past swallets can be either open to receive running water or closed, in which case, water soaks through the soil into underground streams. With large sinkholes such as this one the swallet will often be open but still allow much water to soak underground. -BILLY JOE FUDGE 2011-11-24 15:41:31 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky Color by Billy Joe Fudge

Curb Appeal: The Courthouse is the Wow Factor in Downtown The Square needs some Curb Appeal When you put a house up for sale the realtor will tell you that you need to clean up around your house for curb appeal. If we want to sell people on coming down to the Square to shop or on putting their business down there, the Square needs to be super clean and attractive. The empty buildings need to be kept clean and fresh paint on them at all times. that should be required by the city of Columbia. To me the Court House is the Wow factor for the square so it needs to be sparkling at all times of the day and night. I am so glad the power has been turned on again. The Adair County Honor Roll Board, 1944-45 Right on time, as is so frequently the case, JIM appears at just the right time with some badly needed information, this time with background on the World War II Veterans Honor Board, placed at the Historic Adair County Courthouse on May 26, 1945 - 66 years, 5 months, and and 28 days ago. The Honor Board had over 1,200 names then, but the number has increased over the years to exceed 1,300 today. Lieutenant Gov. Kenneth Tuggle came to Columbia to participate in the dedication, on the occasion of one of the largest gatherings ever on the Adair County Square See also, B.J. Hagy wonders about bronze plaque in the courthouse and Veterans Honor Board is still hanging in the Courthouse, latter with photo(s). By JIM When the call went out in the fall of 1944 for contributions to the latest War Fund Drive, Adair Countians--as ever and always--responded with open hearts and open wallets, and by mid-November, nearly $3,000 had been raised, considerably above the quota of $2,600. W.E. Harris and Rev. L.R. Fugit, the county chairmen for the War Fund Drive, announced that the overage would be put to good use, that it would be kept in the county and "used to assist in erecting an honor roll board in the Court House yard, listing all Adair men in the Armed Forces." Giving Thanks, Thanksgiving 2011, Michelle Obama: Thank a hero Every Thanksgiving, Barack sits down to call some of our troops and thank them for their service. When he tells me about these conversations, it always reminds me of how blessed we are to live in a country where men and women will stand up to protect our freedoms and preserve our way of life. And whenever I've had the chance to meet with these heroes and their families, I've always walked away inspired by their courage and in awe of their strength. BJF Viewpoint on leaving the wings on Courthouse Comments re article 48460 Adair Co Courthouse Being in use is important thing Billy Joe Fudge writes: I, like you, am not going to be upset either way, however the wings do present several problems such as flat roof with leaking problems, they take up much needed space on the square that can be used to create some green space and a gathering space outside this glorious Old Courthouse where we can all meet and visit. Additionally, they make the Downtown seem so crowded and harsh with the asphalt rubbing right up against the building. As to having extra space inside for rental space, etc., there are thousands of square feet of commercial space around the square that is available once we can make the Downtown an attractive, pleasant, inviting, and safe destination. - BILLY JOE FUDGEThanks for the many excellent points: I don't think the Adair Heritage Association has abandoned the idea of removing the wings as to delaying a costly - and more costly to reverse one done - chokepoint in the common goal of preserving the courthouse. The only downside would seem to be a few gallons of paint which might be applied now, only to have the wings removed later. -EW 2011-11-24 07:49:19 | Comments | Printable version

Veterans Honor Board is still hanging in the Courthouse Click on headline for letter plus photo Comments re article 48461 BJ Hagy wonders about bronze plaque in the courthouse Mike Watson writes: The Veterans Honor Board is still hanging in the same place in the Courthouse hallway. It is a large, oak frame with two glass doors. Names of Adair County World War II men and women are in white letters on a black felt background. The accompanying photo does not really do justice, but was the only one I have showing the entire board. - MWThanks, Mike Watson: Maybe it took the installation of the Dakota Meyer sign to really bring out all the significance of the Adair County Court House to the great military service tradition of Adair County, and how important it is to save the courthouse, if just for the veterans. The cost of our efforts to preserve it pales in comparison to what they done - but preserving the courthouse to honor their service is one of the least things we can do. Thanks for your work preserving the memory of Adair County veterans. -EW 2011-11-24 06:56:24 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Veterans and Veterans Day

Lincoln started tradition of pardoning Thanksgiving Turkey Comments re article 48446 Background on Pardoning of the National Thanksgiving Turkey Jon Halsey writes: Would have been nice for the WH (White House. CM) Press Release to have mentioned that it was President Lincoln, at his young son's, tearful request, who issued the first Presidential Pardon for the Thanksgiving Turkey. That's a wonderful historical tidbit: Thanks for the reminder. The White House did overlook that similarity between the current and then president, and especially what a wonderfully liberal thinker Lincoln was, coming out of one of the greatest progressive progenitors of any American Political party ever, the The Ripon Society. It's also a reminder of the hope that there may be better days ahead for Lincoln's Republican Party may, someday, soon, again be steered by real progressives the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Marlow Cook, Jacob Javits, John Sherman Cooper David Heskamp, Gerald Ford, Albert Van Zant, Dwight Eisenhower and Tim Lee Carter. Thanks for the reminder. Neither party has a lock on honest to goodness American values, Christian principles of decency and inclusion, and the esssential cement of American society, pluralism. -EW 2011-11-24 05:52:26 | Comments | Printable version

The famed stock-market crash of 1929 had not much immediate effect on our life. My Dad had a few gold certificates which become worthless but no big deal. What did "do him in" and other farmers, was the combination of the stock market crash or depression and a succession of years of various weather and insect plagues.
