League of American Bicyclists recognition should be next

Columbia/Adair County should seek recognition from the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community

By Gary Rose

Diane and I were at the Rotary meeting the night this idea was discussed. We are very impressed that Coach Grigsby was able to get it up and going so fast. Bicycling Adair supports the program and hopes that it spreads throughout Adair County and then through the State and onto the rest of the country. We thank Jerry Holt for the idea and Coach Grigsby for getting it started.

With the different business in Columbia and Adair County posting the "Bike Friendly" decal and some posting "Share The Road With Bicycles" stickers, the next step should be trying to be recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community. -GARY ROSE, BicyclingAdair.org

Epicurean Kentuckian: When Fairplay wasn't ready for Roquefort

It's introduction elicited one of thousands of immortal Kendallisms

By Dave Rosenbaum While I have sliced off yards of pickle dog, Fishers bologna, liver cheese and rat cheese at Fairplay, not once did any of the regulars around the coal stove in the back take time out from the Rook game to order any Brie, Camembert or Port Salut.

I do recall one Christmas when Dad got a five pound block of Roquefort cheese and had great sport giving folks samples. Kendall Harvey took a taste and broke for the door to spit it out.

He returned and said, "Stan, if a fellow could eat ____, he could live for nothing." - DAVE ROSENBAUM

COF: That's not what I meant

Why can't the Donkeys and the Elephants agree on anything?

Why do the NYT and the WSJ print entirely different versions of the same event?

Epicurean Kentuckian: Fig jam, cheese, and frozen grapes

Favorite snacks in beautiful Joppa: Cheese, Bread and Fig Jam and Grapes, and a great: Frozen grapes for summer snacks
Comments re photo 42709 Epicurean Kentuckian: Fig Jam

Melewi writes:
This is my favorite way to eat. Were the fig preserves made in Kentucky? I do miss my fig tree I had in LA (Lower Alabama). Cheese and grapes are almost a ritual with me at night. I freeze my grapes in the summer for something fresh when I am hot. I froze some of the holiday grapes from IGA last week and they were soooooo goooood. Just some thoughts from Beautiful Joppa.melewi - Melewi
Thanks. Frozen grapes and blueberries are such an amazinging simply snack, you'd wonder if they are available as fair food, or from street vendors. They are better than any processed frozen dessert imaginable. Maybe the Adair Garden Club will get a patent on them.

Great Wooded South: Defense of Persistent Pigheadedness

Philosopher-Poet/Linguist Billy Joe Fudge finds vindication for calling The Flatwoods, properly, The Flatwoods - from the Republic of Texas, a very influential part of The Flatwoods' great heritage. There a 'The Woodlands,' in Texas. He discovered it in his World Travels to Indianapolis (not 'Cincinapolis' as The Flatwoods surburb native Steve Wheeler, as Peeples Passmore, used to refer to the capitol of Indiana or the northside suburbs of Newport, Kentucky.

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Hey Ed, I know you have faced much criticism over the years in your efforts to pay proper homage to the area of South Central Adair County referred to as The Flatwoods. Although The Flatwoods is an area that could only, at best, be classified as a quasi community; you have persisted, at much personal distress, in your proper labeling of The Flatwoods.
