Little things which make a difference: Straightening signs

Maybe a county wide sign straightening day is in order?

Ann Heskamp Curtis writes:
Speaking of little things...I'd like to see all of the City's street signs straightened. The one at Jamestown St. and Heskamp St. leans at a 45 degree angle. -Ann Heskamp Curtis

Early use of newly poured Well Walk

2011-11-09 - Well Walk off Public Square - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Among the first to use the newly poured walk off the southeast corner of the Public Square were a trio from Jones Chapel Road, Gary Wolford, front his wife, Frances Coomer Wolford, back left and Angela Swytka o. They had just come from Dr. Brown's dental office at the end of the walk. Mayor Mark Harris said that Southern Backhoe, the contractors will be back for some cleanup work and will begin deconstruction and reconstruction of the new, wider, more gently sloped steps down to the Adams Alley level. That work will take three to four days, he estimated. As it is being completed, he's working with City Council members to come up with a plan to make the Adams Alley something of an urban gem.

Thank you Billy Joe, for planting the trees

A car washed without cleaning the wheels does not look very good. That's why the little things make such of a difference. -RALPH ROY WAGGENER

By Ralph Roy Waggener

The tree planting Billy Joe Fudge led back a few years ago on KY.55 north from Columbia is showing results.

Not all or even most of the trees survived, but several are getting to a good size. The trees along roads help clean the air, at least that's what I've heard for years. Trees do make the drive more pleasant.

Mike Watson: Not a drop of rain election Day

His grandfather Woodie Cape would check the weather before heading to Glensfork to vote. An early morning drizzle would cause him declare weather too unlikely to vote, but, as the day wore, civic duty compelled action, Mike Watson recalls in this story of old time elections

By Mike Watson

Big Al asks if he can have Bud with lunch after election

Big Al Owens
After this election, can I go to eat lunch here in town and wash it down with an ice cold Bud? -BIG AL
Thanks for your question: The election didn't change that. You'll still have to have your Bud privately The only thing the election changed was that the low turnout also lowered the number of names needed on a petition to get the issue on the ballot. Countywide, only 936 valid signatures are needed now - the lowest in a long time. You'll have to have a non-alcoholic Bud with your lunch, for now.-EW

Trabue House great for birdwatching

Spot Hairy Woodpecker and Downy Woodpecker in same tree at same time at historic Trabue-Russell House, KY

Melewi writes:
Barbara Armitage and I were standing outside of the Trabue house (201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY) Wednesday morning, talking, when we heard birds in a tree beside us, we looked up and there was a Hairy Woodpecker and a Downy Woodpecker on the same tree at the same time.

These are two woodpeckers that people have trouble identifying because they look so much alike, but the Hairy is so much bigger than the Downy and when you see them so close together like we did you can really tell the difference.

The Trabue House may be a place to go and count the birds, at the Great Backyard Bird Count next year. -MELEWI - Maury - Maury E. Lewis
The Great Backyard Bird Count is February 17-20, 2011
