Stray Kitty at Mark and Michele Hale residence

2011-11-03 - Glens Fork, KY - Photo by Mark Hale.
A stray kitty come to our house. It has a collar so it must belong to someone. Anyone in the Crocus Road vicinity of Glens Fork who owns this cat may call us at 270-378-5021. It comes and goes as it pleases so if owners would call us then we could let them know when it's here. It's really a nice cat with a gentle disposition. We would like to find its home or a new home - anywhere but here. We already have too many cats as it is. - MARK HALE

Everywhere he goes, they know his home by the band

Mike Watson writes:
Congratulations on a record that may never be beaten! When I went to teach at Anderson County High School [ACHS] in Lawrenceburg in 1984 they knew more about the Adair County Band program than I did. For the next 26 years when someone there learned where I was from, they'd say, "Oh, they have a great band." And my standard reply became, "Yes, we do." -MIKE WATSON
Thanks. And another distinguished name is entered on Billy Joe Fudge's Congratulations Directory

Once again, JIM has found a gem

'Sudden death' of R.A.C. Martin had impact on unrelated court cases

Mike Watson writes:
Jim has found a gem in the News again! In recent civil court case research, I discovered that in the late 1870s and 1880s local lawyers were using the death R.A.C. Martin as a time reference when questioning witnesses in court or taking depositions.

Not the robbery of the Bank of Columbia, but Mr. Martin's death. For example: "...was this before or after the sudden death of R.A.C. Martin..." Certainly, for many of us, it is difficult to remember specific dates.

The lawyers knew that this specific day would forever be impressed in the memories of citizens of Columbia and Adair County. Witnesses could more readily state if a specific incident was before or after the "sudden death" of Cashier Martin. - MIKE WATSON

Bicycle Repair offered by Mike Hinton

Mike Hinton writes:My name is Mike Hinton. My father in law is Billy Joe Fudge. He was telling me of people needing bicycle repair. I would be more than happy to help those people out. I managed a bicycle shop in Lexington for 4.5 years and am still an avid cyclist and wrencher. I even still donate my skills at a nonprofit organization which helps people repair their bicycles. I would be more than happy to help the man in need with his bicycles. I merely miss working on them on a regular basis. Feel free to give out my info those in need. Thanks and safe riding! -MIKE HINTON. cycledelicbikes@yahoo.com

Writer inquires GOP idea on Dark & Dangerous Intersection

Comments re article 47984 Victoria Pike says Not Enough Traffic for intersection lights

Charles Marshburn writes:
I would like to hear how the Republicans are addressing this calamity! -CHARLES MARSHBURN
Very good idea, Mr. Marshburn. What are the Republicans offering? And we haven't heard from Gatewood Galbraith or any of his Shot Callers, either. Tell you the truth, we're not sure who either David Williams or Gatewood have anointed as their Adair County vicars, but, something needs to be did. By this time in most elections some candidate should have at least promised to build the badly needed Eastern Bypass, promised an Adair County Green River State Resort Park, immediate funds for a new elementary school, earmarked $500,000 for preservation of the Adair County Historic Courthouse (similar grants have been made in the last four years) guaranteed the completion of the Heartland Parkway, guaranteed a KCTCC vocational school, or promised to speed up the badly needed (especially for Adair County, US68/Louie B. Nunn Interchange in Edmonton. But not this year. Ah well, it's maybe to0 early. After all, the election is still five days off. -EW.

Amazing photo! writer says of pictures Maury E. Lewis sent

Comments re photo 42523 Birds of Kentucky MauryBird needs ID ANS American BitterJudy Morrison writes:
Oh, Columbia Magazine! Thank you for this amazing photo! Also for the access to the website (All About Birds), where you not only see the birds, you can listen to their songs. A gigantic thank you to all concerning this photo! Check out the All About Birds website. Awesome!!! -JUDY MORRISON.
All the thanks goes to an amazingly awesome Adair Countian, Maury E. Lewis and to the for now, Innocent Bystander who took the photos at her request. CM is a charter member of the Maury E. Lewis Fan Club. Just a reminder, too, that the Great Backyard Bird Count is not that far away. It's down the road just past the election, Thanksgiving, Christmas in Columbia, Christmas Day, and New Year's. In 2012, it will be February 17-20. It's time to do a little extra study on Bird ID. As far as can be determined. The MauryBird photo is worthy of an entry in the World Record Book of Guinnesses as a first ever in CM's Birds of Kentucky.-EW

A Right Charming Story about a working class dog

By Ed Waggener

My favorite Marcum by name brother in law, Keith Marcum, Georgetown, IN, is a great story teller, almost the equal of his mother, Geniece Marcum, who retold the tale about a dog's inadequate table manners, which follows.
Keith was bird hunting with an uncle and an employee of his uncle's. The dogs had a successful hunt and were hungry. The employee got out some bread and potted meat to feed his dog and methodically began the assembly, while the hungry dog waited impatiently. The man finished slathering the first slice with the potted meat, then laid it on a stump while he opened the bread bag to get a slice to top it.

While he was doing that, the hungry dog grabbed the food from the stump, which angered his owner.

"Idiot!" the man yelled as he slapped the food out of the dog's mouth. "It ain't a sandwich yet."
That, we thought, was a charming tale about a truly deserving Dog socio-economic class. It's a genre CM pays too little attention to, instead hyperbolizing the exploits of the elitist intelligentsia of Dogdom, the likes of the controversially partisan Jack Russell Stephens; or Old Raymond, or Richie Janes' fortune creating Border Collie, which, on its own has multiplied the Richie fortune; or Tommy Grider's storebought German Shepherd with more degrees than a college president. It was posted in the interest of being Fair and Balanced. If anybody else has a story of similar nature to share, we're needing at least about four. -CM

Victoria Pike says Not Enough Traffic for intersection lights

A Democratic Party Contact Person's Response to Problem with Dark Intersection: That's what Adair Democratic Womens Club president is finding out when she advocates with the Kentucky Department of Highways and the Gov. Steve Beshear Administration, that traffic count does not yet justify lights at LBN/KY 61 Intersection. She's offered to put light up at own expense, but has been told she can't

By Victoria Pike

We have been told on numerous occasions that we DO NOT have enough traffic out here for the state to put up lights around the interchange.
