Remembers old Twin City Drive-in Theater Now takes family to Skyline Drive-in in Summersville, Green Co., KY Drew Johnson writes: I remember going to the Twin City Drive-In many-a-night. After my family moved to Hart County on Halloween Night, 1977, I remember the first movies we saw at the Twin City (in 1978): a double-bill of "The Wrath of God" and "Star Wars". In the following years, I'd seen lots of movies at the Twin City, especially old horror movies (in the pre-VHS days, you had to catch them at drive-ins). I was sad to see it go.Comments re photo 41300 Historic Hart Co KY Twin City Drivein from Larry Smith collection 2011-10-23 10:13:39 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

JIM: Did Col. Belknap draw biggest crowd ever in Columbia, KY? Jim poses a question: Was the campaign visit by Col. Morris Belknap, the Republican candidate for Governor in 1903, the first gubenatorial election after the assassination of Governor Wm. Goebel, the largest crowd ever assembled in Columbia. It may have been, by accounts of the Hartford Republican whose account included the following passage: 'Never in the history of Kentucky did a candidate for Governor make a more triumphal entry into Columbia than did Morris Belknap Tuesday.' By JIM The Courthouse bedecked: Col. Belknap comes to Adair County "...and politics -- the damedest / in Kentucky." (Judge J.H. Mulliagan, 1902) The gubernatorial election of 1903 was a strange beast -- even by Kentucky standards. Likes blue sky courthouse photos best Tami Wilson writes: Just wanted to say that if I were going to do a postcard of the courthouse, I'd wait until the trees grew out and looked more natural. I don't know anything about pruning trees- I guess I trust the arborists for that, but I'm not a fan of the chopped-off look. I also think the courthouse looks a bit nicer against a deep blue sky. Thanks, Tami. Couldn't agree more on the blue skies courthouse photo, and Pen has taken some beautiful ones; and George Kolbenschlag and many others have taken dozens of prettier courthouse scenes. I think the write was simply talking about how much of the courthouse could be comprehended in that barely adequate point-and-shoot picture. As for the trees, I'm all for more of them, but I don't see any reason for allowing large ones so close. It would be great if part of the unnecessary pavement were surrendered to a park like setting with shade trees and benches. The Square would be safer, cooler, and much more inviting if it were less like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and more like Frederick Law Olmstead's Louisville, KY parkways. -EW 2011-10-23 06:45:46 | Comments | Printable version
