Aaron Branham helps Ronald McDonald House drive

2011-10-20 - 201 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ellen Zornes.
Aaron Branham, six year old son of Leslie Scott Branham; grandson of Wish List organizer Norma Scott and Ronnie Scott and great-grandson of Joyce Fair, helps Debbie Dunn, grandmother of recently born twins, Ethan and Conner Dunn. The Ronald McDonald House of Louisville was there for Barry and Leslie Dunn, the twins' parents, for the days following their premature birth and especially after when Conner developed life threatening problems. Aaron's family was also helped by the House when he was born with health problems and had to stay in the hospital for several months. And today, he is helping others who will be staying at the Ronald McDonald Houses!

Near Disastrous Caving site was marshmallow roast venue

Martha Berry writes:
If the i of that cave is the same one that is on the farm that was owned by Bob White's father, we High School kids used to have picnics there. I was too wimpy to explore any farther than a few feet into the mouth of it though. But we enjoyed roasting marshmallows and wieners over the campfire we built at the entrance. Such a great place. -MARTHA BERRY

Historic Adair County Courthouse: Robert A. Taft argued here

It was the case of Elrod & Company v Royer Wheel Company. The year was 1920. Robert A. Taft, son of a President, worked with Judge W.W. Jones of Columbia as attorneys for Elrod & Company. On the other side were Gordon Montgomery of Columbia, Judge James Denton of Somerset, James R. Garnett of Columbia and Ben Smith of Somerset. The outcome is below.

By Mike Watson

The recent photographs of the Historic Adair County Courthouse have been excellent. My compliments to the several artists who took them. As my cousin, brother Jim, recently stated in a submission, our Courthouse has seen so much action since 1884. This wonderful building holds many exciting bits of history. If only it could and would reveal some of them, we would all be far richer today.

Billy Joe Fudge addresses issue of Confused Trees

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Drought stress often causes many hardwood species to go prematurely dormant. Then when it begins to rain and the temperature fluctuates some trees are fooled into a springtime mode. Most likely this is the cause of this year's aberrant blooming activity. -BILLY JOE FUDGE

Book Review: Lilburn Roy's Book on Adair County Bottlers

Book is selling fast. It's available at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY

By Mike Watson

A new craze, of sorts, sprang up in Columbia and Adair County a few months ago when CM readers began sending questions concerning and photos of old Columbia soft drink bottles. To many people, this was a new avenue into local history. Not so new to some collectors. It is an avenue, like so many others, that should be pursued in an effort to preserve the vast local culture of our fine town and county.

Billy Joe Fudge, Retire District ForesterKentucky Division of Forestry

As it is often said, big things come in small packages.

That seem to wax true as I pulled into my drive, and this orange leaf grabbed by attention from afar.

Isn't it true that beauty is where you find it and it is everywhere you're looking for it? -BILLY JOE FUDGE

A near-disastrous Adair County caving expedition

Adair County notables Rollin Hurt and Melvin White and two buddies, when sixteen years of age, had a caving experience with some Tom Sawyerish parallels. maybe not so coincidental, if you are reading this today, in Halloween mode, and your mind is conjuring that Tom's creator's procreation was with this same Adair County. But that is speculative. This hair raising story JIM is unfolding is the Gospel truth. It was in the Adair County News as Bible true as any verse in Hezekiah.-CM

"Their candles given out:" A near-disastrous Adair County caving expedition

Some of the most gripping passages ever penned by Mark Twain, Adair County's world-famous "grandson of the Shire," appeared in his novel Tom Sawyer. These passages involve Tom and Miss Becky Thatcher (his petite amie du jour) and their harrowing experience in McDougal's Cave.

A somewhat similar saga occurred in Adair County in (or about) 1876, the same year the world met Twain's Tom Sawyer and friends.
