Question: What happened to old courthouse bell?

JIM poses Great Question of the Ages:

In Mike Watson's History of Adair County (v 1 p 51), he notes that when plans were laid in to build a new courthouse in the 1880s, "C.J. and Uriah L. Taylor purchased the old courthouse for the sum of $180. This did not include the bell, chairs, stoves, tables, or the stone under the columns."

I have to wonder if the old bell were installed in the new courthouse upon completion of that structure.

Another question for The Great Minds of Adair County, I suppose.

Two lanes of traffic will no longer be needed on Square

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
In addition to a little more green space, with a just a tad of creative thinking there would be room for close to twice as much parking since we no longer need two lanes of traffic around the square or room for semi-truck traffic to swing wide entering, negotiating, and exiting our Downtown Square. -BILLY JOE FUDGE

When he was in England in the AIr Force and told folks there about being from a "dry" county, British friends couldn't believe such a thing existed

Dave Burton writes:
For years I've pondered what the real reason was for communities voting against the sale of alcohol....When I was serving in the Air Force in England, I made mention that I grew up in a "dry" county.

My British friends couldn't believe that such a thing existed and asked why.

Travel: George Kolbenschlag photos from Fall in West

Fall in Colorado and Utah has spectacular color in both States with Cottonwood and Aspen peaking at the same time
Click on headline for introduction and spectacular photo(s) by George Kolbenschlag

By George Kolbenschlag

We are just back from a trip to Colorado and Utah to visit with son George and his family in Salt Lake City and son Peter in Paonia, Colorado. We hit the peak of both the cottonwoods and aspen in both states. The color was unusually spectacular because both peaked at the same time. There are four photos accompanying. They were all taken in Colorado, on the Eastern slope of the Rockies southeast of Grand Junction on the McLure pass (Highway 133) between Paonia and Carbondale and on the Hebler pass between Paonia and Crested Butte. - GEORGE KOLBENSCHLAG
If you go: According to Google Maps, McClure Pass is 1,395 miles, a 24 hour drive, west of Grider Hill Pass, Columbia, KY.

In Columbia: Sparky's Concert. In Campbellsville: Campbellsville University Homecoming. In Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, a great weekend to take Know Your County Better Tours, armed with a camera for Fall Foliage opportunities, especially Edge Trees

By Ed Waggener

There's more to do today listed in the CM Events for Columbia/Adair County and the surrounding area than anybody could get around to - and that doesn't count some events we didn't details on!

The big one for Adair County today is Sparky's Concert, with proceeds going to the Crusade for Children. The concert honors Charles "Sparky" Sparks. In Campbellsville, KY, it's homecoming weekend at Campbellsville University, a highlight of the school year, with events continuing throughout the day.

There are also some big Yard Sales, and the Day appears to be another for great Know Your County Better tours to enjoy the Fall Foliage.
