Mark Hale: For staying dry, but why not settle issue with vote?

He's outspoken - against - alcoholic beverages, sold legally or otherwise. He calls for amicable discussion: 'We shouldn't get angry with each other on this issue.' He cites instances in area where economic booms haven't, he says, followed legal sales.

By Mark Hale
Personal commentary

Ed, You had to know that I would eventually have to speak my peace. As hard as I tried to not send a response, I just couldn't keep reading all the stuff about the alcohol debate with out spouting off myself.

Favorite Old Photo: Columbia, KY crowd, 1964

2011-10-14 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo from the Tiffany and Eddie Kessler Collection.
Huge gathering on Columbia Square in 1964 "Here is an old photo Eddie wanted me to send. It is so neat. It's around 1964 and it's some kind celebration on the downtown square - Eddie said this crowd rivaled the Joe Diffie crowd last weekend during Downtown Days. It came from Morrison Studios. You are welcome to publish it when you need a filler photo. Thanks!" - TIFFANY HADLEY KESSLER. Note: Thanks for the wonderful old photo, which has what appears to be a picture of a Dairy Days celebration. There are, of course, classic businesses shown, starting in the upper left, clockwise, with the Hotel Miller where the Adair Annex is today, a much different remaining 400 quadrant set of buildings, and the Corner Drug where the Flower Garden is today. Ben Franklin stood where Barger Insurance Agency and the Edward D. Jones office is today, in 2011. Comments on the photo are welcome to preferably using the Comments button with this photo. -EW

When people work out of town, they shop out of town

The Issue is JOBS. Wet/Dry is secondary. Drinking is simply a matter of choice. An economic issue. But the bigger issue for Adair County is jobs, she says

Jamie Isabelle writes:
As for the alcohol sale in Adair County, that is the least of my concerns for Adair County. Adair County needs factories and jobs. It is sad when people have to go to other counties to work. I know for myself, if I am working in another county; then I go to their stores while I am there. Does Adair not realize that most people probably do this and this is losing money for Adair county. Alcohol sales might actually benefit Columbia from the revenue. Either way if people are going to drink, it's their choice and will just take their money to other counties again losing money for Adair. I guess keeping the local bootlegger's pockets full than the whole town is more important. -JAMIE ISABELLE.

Teetotaller sees nothing wrong with legal sale of alcohol

Marcia Shuffett writes:
I agree with Lois. I am actually a teetotaler but that is only because I just don't care for the taste of alcohol. I do not see anything wrong with a beer or two or a glass of wine with dinner. The people who really want to drink will get it one way or the other. It would possibly be safer to keep these people closer to home. I don't think a glass of wine would promote alcoholism. -MARCIA SHUFFETT
