Lavoy Price, Taylor Co., KY (1932-2011)

She was one of South Central Kentucky's most widely know restaurant and general store operators. She retired as owner and operator of Prices Grocery, near Saloma, after over fifty years at the store and restaurant, in partnership with her husband, Roland W. Price until his death in 1986. She was an unforgettable personality, and a font of community news. She is remembered for her warmth, wit and for the wonderful food she served from a groaning board buffet at embarassingly low prices; so popular on Saturdays when diners would drive in from surrounding county seat towns. Her generosity was legendary. If she thought one hadn't eaten enough from the buffet, she was known to refuse to take full price. She was a member of the Zion Separate Baptist Church in Taylor County. -CM

C.S. Harris on the value of independent voting

By "Jim"

Former Adair County News editor and staunch Democrat Charles Snow Harris wrote the following in a letter of support to his long time friend, C.G. "Gus" Jeffries, in the fall of 1921, when Jeffries was a candidate for County Judge on the Independent ticket. The letter appeared in the October 11, 1921 News.Good citizenship is unquestionably better than party regularity and, in my judgment, independent voting -- voting for men and measures - is far better than blindly following the Rooster or the Cabin and is in reality the safety valve of good and wholesome government.(For the record, Mr. Jeffries won the election, defeating Republican incumbent W.S. Sinclair by fifty votes. Two other races in this election were considerably closer. George Coffey defeated Democrat Evin Akin by 13 votes to claim the Sheriff's office, but even that slim margin amounted to a veritable landslide compared to the Circuit Court Clerk's race, where C.F. Paxton carried the day over Republican M.C. Winfrey by six ballots.) -JIM

Those Adair County Yard Folk sit up by themselves!

Maury Lewis writes:
All of these folks are sitting on their own. We were not propping them up.They will sit in swings, in rocking chairs, or on an old log like they are sitting on here. (See photo linked article)

Some of the other Yard Folks have an extra leg or stake that is driven into the ground so they can stand in your flower beds. Or in a potted plant on your porch.

The Yard Folks are stuffed with plastic bags so when it rains they will dry out quickly. We chose making Yard Folks instead of scarecrows so they can be out all year long for you and your neighbors and family to enjoy.

We invite you to come by our booth on the square (not in the food court) to take a look. You may see one that reminds you of someone you know. Several of the Folks were made with people in mind.

See You At Downtown Days. . --Maury Lewis
