Kentucky Color - Crabapple breakfast

A breakfast of what appeared to be ripe Crabapples was being served up at 205 Lowes Lane this morning. The time of the munching was 6:20 DST (Deer Standard Time). I have credible reports from experts in the field that Deer do not observe Daylight Savings Time.

The accompanying picture is photographic evidence that we urbanites should be cognizant of perpetuating a healthy, diverse urban forest for not only our physical and emotional well being but for the other members of the animal kingdom who share our urban space with us, as well.

In every way imaginable, it is in the best interest of our city and county governments, public schools, Lindsey Wilson, Chamber of Commerce, all our business community, and each citizen to commit to doing a better job planning and managing our urban forest landscape. -Billy Joe Fudge

Wilmoth Foreman: Somewhere On A Poetry Path

Some rhymes, some rhythms, some rinds

By Wilmoth Foreman
Sometimes I wax poetic. (Don't we all?) Here is some fallout from those lapses.

Beginning with:

RAINDROP
What must it be like
to be a raindrop
rappelling from a cloud
to land God only knows where

piercing the air
with its falling,
turned into breathless beauty
by some fickle
flirting light beam.

Bearer
since eternity
of liquid life.
One day as we were chatting, now-retired Columbia State professor Bea Curry said the first lines of this next poem. Since I couldn't get them out of my head, they evolved into:

Carol Perkins: Calamity at the Checkout

It is a fact of life that one never gets nearly mortally wounded checking out of a Lowe's. Except for our heroine, whose fault, it was not, she says. And never has to be as long as there is a husband still handy after 43 years of marriage, to blame.
The next earlier Carol Sullivan column: Carol Perkins: Fix It

By Carol Perkins

When the boards hit me over the head, it was all Guy's fault. He caused me to see stars and all he did was laugh. Laughed AFTER he asked if I were hurt. HURT? I nearly had a concussion. I'm not sure I didn't because I haven't been thinking straight lately, even repeating myself.

Poetry by Robert Stone: The choice to hear, a sonnet

The choice to hear
- a sonnet for David Fairbanks Ford
Tomorrow cannot find me satisfied
beyond the hopes I set before me now.
The strength with which I firmly set aside
all lesser things the greater will allow.

Still living yesterdays can pull me down
below the good intended for today.
The force with which I disciplinedly drown
all former bad the helpful will display.

Each present moment is a chance to move
above the habits holding me in thrall.
The might with which I sorely seek to prove
all hindrances advantage will install.

I have the choice to hear the call of drum
where I am going or where I come from.

- Robert Stone, 25 September 2011

100 years ago: odds and ends from the News

In respect to the deep Quaker pacifism of both Jim and the editor of CM and in the interest of getting on with the story, the usual preamble, the possibly seditious and incendiary prologue, is appended as a postamble, an epilogue, today. -EW

By Jim

On Friday, September 22nd, the fledgling five-year-old Citizens Bank closed its doors and a state examiner soon arrived on the Square to ascertain "the exact status of the Bank's business." While the examiner refused to comment until completing his investigation, assistant cashier W.A. Coffey expressed his certainty that depositors would be paid. (Mr. Coffey was as good as his word. The next edition of the News reported "We are further authorized...to state that all depositors will be paid in full.")

September 3, 2011. Sand Cave, Mammoth Cave National park, Kentucky.

Although the sign said "Do not touch!" local anarchist and sometimes Columbia Magazine commentator Mark Hale did the unthinkable. Encouraged by the photographer (fellow antagonist, anarchist and pretend historian Chris Bennett) Mr. Hale did in-fact try to enter Sand Cave. It is clear to the author, this duo has an outright disrespect for written government rules. Sand Cave is the site of the "Floyd Collins tragedy of 1925." Looking on the violation with discourse, "caveologist" Professor A. W. Reed, condemned the violation, but did not stop it.

Wishing to remain unnamed, the premiere Floyd Collins Historian of Adair County was also present, he wanted to go into Sand Cave also.

When I was a child I always enjoyed the commercials for Timex watches hosted by the respected news broadcaster, John Cameron Swayze. I some ways those television ads were a precursor of today's reality shows, though they were much shorter and far more clever.

It happened so long ago that some of the interesting detail may be missing. But if this story is anything like my others, I can count on a few of my faithful readers to fill in what I left out.
