History of the United Methodist Acton Retreat Center

Acton Retreat Center is located at 6440 Liberty RD (Acton, Taylor Co.) Campbellsville, KY. The Acton Camp Meeting is underway at 6:00pmCT each evening September 23-25. This history is published thanks to Martha Berry, daughter of the late Dr. V.P. Henry, and Janet Bradley, the author of this history -CM

By Janet Bradley

In 1898 a group of Methodist people within the bounds of what was then the Lebanon District of the Methodist Episcopal Church South met in the tiny village of Acton, Kentucky, for the purpose of holding a brush arbor camp meeting revival. Camp Acton, now known as the Acton Retreat Center, is a five acre facility now owned and operated by the Columbia District of the United Methodist Church.

Circle R Family Restaurant re-opening: October 18, 2011

2011-09-23 - 712 Russell RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Longtime Columbia, KY Businessman Peter Cheng says the re-opening of the Columbia/Adair County institution, the Circle R Restaurant, is an humbling challenge, the biggest undertaking he's faced since opening Tray's Garden here 17 years ago. With him is Assistant Manager at Tray's Garden, Alice Chen. They're standing in the middle of the restaurant's new 40 seat dining area, added by former owner Michael Stephens to the existing 30 plus seats. Mr. Cheng will open the doors at 5amCT, Tuesday, October 18, 2011. The big hurdle, he says, is to meet the expectations of the community, to continue the restaurant's wide reputation for authentic Adair County cooking, and to keep the traditions and legends of the Circle R alive. He's been encouraged, he says, by the outpouring of support he's already receiving.

What would Adair County do without Lindsey Wilson College? Malvina Farkle Day is just the tip of the iceberg.

Kentucky Color: Silage chopping in Southern Kentucky

Click on headline for Kentucky Color/silage chopping with photo

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Silage chopping time in Southern Kentucky is a sure sign of "Autumn upon us".Feeding livestock is not as simple as feeding folks. If we want something to eat in January, we just head off to the local grocery or diner and chow down.

Not so with livestock for if they are to eat in January there would need to have been some serious preparations made during the previous growing season. -BILLY JOE FUDGE
