The Whitehurst Diaries: Walking with Willis

Overturned cat dishes were a sign the possum had foraged, but that bit of mischief couldn't spoil the outset of a wonderful walk in the Big Creek Valley, in the company of Willis, with wonderful flora and fauna, now in early fall, in a Kentucky autumn's wonderful outburst of yellow beauty.

I slid the switch on the A/C thermostat to "Off", listened as the unit rumbled to a stop, then walked through the small house opening windows and shutters to night air which at 10 pm on Saturday had cooled only slightly from the oppressive heat of the day.

Tillie gave a warm welcome to all the funny people from Adair Co., KY who came to adore her. While her constant companion Monkey seeming accepting, even highly of approving of the Farmers Market Tillie Size Early Halloween pumpkin proffered by great Mema, Tillie wasn't so sure.

Query: Tarters Chapel Cemetery Information

David C Taylor writes:
I'm interested in having a headstone replaced at Tarter's Chapel Cemetery and hoping you can help. I have two aunts that buried there and both headstones are about 100 years old and the dates etc are becoming hard to read. Since I live in Louisville it would be helpful if you could provide a point of contact in that area that could help. My mother and uncle would be very greatful so that their sisters might not be forgotten. Thank You, David C. Taylor - David C Taylor

Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 017. Wisdom of Bunk King

It's Just Me Again. No. 017. The Wisdom of Bunk King
Is Chuck Hinman your favorite Sunday with CM columnist, as many tell us? If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 321, Grandma's Roast Beef

By Chuck Hinman

One doesn't read far in the Bible, old or new testament, before one discovers that wisdom is to be desired and is associated with age and experience.

In our church, New Harmony Baptist Church in rural Bartlesville, Oklahoma, I became aware that a wonderful old man, Bunk King, was the kind of man the Bible refers to as an elder -- not a preacher elder but a lay elder. Bunk passed away a number of years ago but his influence on our church is still felt.

100 years ago: most of the news that was fit to report

It was the Glory Days of Baseball and major games were being played everywhere. Big Games. Important Showdowns. Moores School House went abroad - but all within the limitless bounds of vast Russell County, KY - to French Valley, stunning the Valleyites 8-6. For Columbians there was joy in seeing rival Springfield fall to host Lebanon, but equal anguish in the success of enemy Lebanon, making the outcome - to paraphrase a favorite saying of the late W. Stephen Aaron, - "totally invenereal to us." This and other divers and wondrous events happened that way, in the Great History of This Place, revealed by "Jim" -EW

By "Jim"

All sorts of news items appeared on the front page of the News 100 years this week (September 6, 1911).

Without a doubt, the most sensational item involved the attempted elopement of Mr. George W. Cook, who lived near Columbia on the Greensburg Road, and "a Miss Jeans," the daughter of Wes Jeans. (Her given name was Anna.) The article stated Miss Jeans was about 17 (that number being perhaps a bit on the high side) while the groom was a stripling lad of fifty-eight summers who had never before been married. Quipped the News, with understatement worthy of the Brits, "Mr. Cook's action was a surprise to his friends."

Kentucky Color - Crepe Myrtle Summer

Shade and inviting beauty beneath Crepe Myrtle has made even record breaking heat wave bearable
Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge, retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

The shade beneath the Crepe Myrtle in my back yard was cool and inviting even on a record-breaking 100+ degree September day. This has been an exceptional year in Kentucky for the South's finest landscape plant.

During the bitter cold, ice age temperatures of the winters of 76/77 and 77/78 most Crepe Myrtles along with Mimosas were killed. I think I would be pretty safe in saying that any of these two species growing here and now either root-sprouted or were planted since that time. -Billy Joe Fudge
