Card of Thanks from Melvin and Margaret Antle

Melvin Antle writes:
We want to thank everyone for their help Thursday night when our barn burned. The fire department is to be highly commended for their quick response and how they worked so hard to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings. Also, thanks to our neighbors, Dale, Joey, Kevin, Jarrod, Ronnie and others whom I may not know about, who worked so quick and hard to get vehicles moved, and helped in so many ways. Thanks to all the support and love shown to us by family and friends. It was a big loss and we don't know the cause of the fire, but it could have been so much worse, May God bless each and everyone of you.Melvin and Margaret Antle - Melvin Antle

Adair Farmers Market: Shopping List, Sat., Sept. 3, 2011

Open 8am-12pm noon CT, Today, Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011. This is the Exclusively CM Farmers Market Shopping List (just click Print on your browser), mark the items you want, and head on out. Or, just head on out. It's a great day at the farmers market.

By Linda Waggener, Girl Reporter, CM Saturday Farmers Market
(c) ColumbiaMagazine.com Report, Live from 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY

So proud to be here!!!

What a fun place! I'm planning a Tom and Evan and Tillie Trip soon, and found just the right Mema surprise: A early Halloween pumpkin for the boys favorite time of the year.

In our family, we start Halloween celebrations when the first walnut falls.

Here's what's at the Farmer's Market today at 8:31amCT:
  • Darrell Bunnell, Coview Farms, Coburg, KY: FARM FRESH EGGS. Cherry Tomatoes. Yellow Tomatoes. Yellow Squash. Purple Eggplant. Melons.
  • Caitlyn Bunnell, Coview Farms, Coburg, KY: White Bread. Wheat Bread. Zucchini Bread.
  • Kevin Thiery, Edmonton RD, Columbia, KY: Tomatoes, big ones. Tomatoes, cherry ones. Okra. And More
  • Jeff Scott, Antioch, KY: No sign of him or Henrietta today. Heck! Wanted to say Hi the him and see or send word to his wife, a hero of mine. You know, behind every great orchard man, there's a great woman.
  • Margie Rooks, Sano, KY: Pumpkins. Yellow and Green Peppers. Butternut Squash. Acorn Squash. Hot Banana Peppers. Cayenne Peppers. Watermelons. Gourds.
And much, much more, too numerous for the weekend Farmers Market reporter to list everything. Besides, I'm too busy shopping. Y'all come on out. The great Adair County fresh food is the big thing. But the bonuses make it special: It's fun to talk with buddies who gather here to talk as much as do business, just like we do at the Columbia Post Office.

And it's worth it just to take a look at the college from Fairground Street, to see the grand new office corner Jackie (Dean Jacquelyn Montgomer. -editor), has, with the best view in Adair County. And to steal a look at the names on the front of the nursing building, honoring one of the all time great Adair Countians and his wife. Won't spoil the announcement, cause this is big! (But bring a pair of binoculars and see for yourself, before you read it on CM)

And, of course, it's worth to taste the foods I buy here after my mother works the same magic with it she did when I was a small child in Sulphur Well. And to hear my first husband say, the way he say's his Dad used to say, "That's the best tomatoes I ever ate. They'd take the premium at the Adair County Fair."

.It's a Thanks for the Morning Day. A special one for me. I get to be with Mom. Be in Columbia all day. Be here for both Chimes Times downtown. Most days, I have to hurry to get to the Square in time for the 5 o'clock playing - a great time, though I sometimes have to pull over when my eyes mist.

Anyway. Do come out to the Farmers Market. It's such an asset to our community.

!!!! -Linda

Make this CM article your shopping list. PRINT out and circle the items you want, and hurry on out.

The Adair Farmers Market is open at these times: 6am-10amCT, Tuesdays and Fridays. And Open Saturdays, 8am-12pm noon CT. during growing season, at the Adair County Extension Office Parking Lot, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY. - Nick Roy, Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture

First things first: The CM Events listing; then, maybe, a story

A CM Event: A simple - but very important - utility to Live Life in Adair Co., KY
True Believers from Russell Springs, KY at Tabor Church, MAP
Adair County Sunday night singing
True Believers from Russell Springs, KY, will be singing at Tabor Community Church, 1477 Fairplay RD; Columbia KY, at 6pmCT, Sunday night, September 4, 2011. Pastor Ralph Hadley and congregation invite everyone to attend. -Patricia Hadley

Thanks, Patricia Hadley, and all the other CM contributors who consistently send complete, easy to read, easy to post, effective events listing.

First things first. For CM's readers, the No. 1 feature is the Events Calendar. Writing that listing should always be the first task of anyone submitting news of an Event for posting on CM. The story is secondary.

You can help CM do what it does best: Put fans in the stands. Butts in the Bleachers. People in the Pews, Activate activists, Change Spectators and Couch Potatoes into Participants. Change watchers into doers. Do our part to make Adair County what it ought to be: A place to live life, not just read, watch, or hear about it.CM Events are the most scanned part of the CM Daily News.

By TFC Billy Gregory, Public Affairs Officer

EDMONTON, KY - 47-year-old Lawrence Melton of Indianapolis, IN was treated and released Friday, September 2, 2011 after being involved in a collision on Stockton Street in the limits of Edmonton in Metcalfe County, KY.

Melton was operating a motorcycle, westbound, when he rear ended a westbound 2006 Ford Crown Victoria operated by 30-year-old Mike Dubree. Kentucky State Police Detective Sgt. Kevin Hunt is investigating.

Story courtesy TFC William Gregory, Public Affairs Officer, Kentucky State Police Post 15, 1118 Jamestown ST, (at Exit 49, Louie B. Nunn Parkway), Columbia, KY. JIM/The bridge and the cupola: a followup

Advocate of the cupola won election to Kentucky House, sayeth ultimate authority, Mike Watson, within "History of Adair County, Volume I."

By Jim

In response to an email inquiring about the outcome of the bridge-and-cupola election, I did a bit of research and it appears Mr. Dohoney's honey-tongued promises of a cupola carried the day.

I've been unable to pinpoint the year in which this election took place, but Mike Watson's "History of Adair County," Vol 1, indicates Mr. Dohoney (who easily could have paid both for bridge and cupola out of his petty cash fund) served in the Kentucky House on three separate occasions in the 1830s and 1840s, while Mr. Stewart's name appeared nowhere among the elected of the land.

Apparently, the folks of Columbia and Adair County preferred a cupola at which to gaze instead of a bridge to cross to get there to do the gazing. (Reminds me of the old story about the guy spending his last two bucks to buy a billfold. Shades of Della, Jim, and the Magi!)

(Mr. John Stewart was the father of quick-witted, acerbic-tongued Columbia attorney William Stewart, who passed in 1904.) A barbed comment about barbed wire from Judge H.C. Baker
